Volvo XC60: Most Produced Volvo Ever!

The XC60 breaks the record of the 240 as the most produced Volvo - albeit in two generations.

Attention, generation change in Gothenburg: The Volvo XC60 has gently but firmly dethroned the legendary 240. With over 2.7 million units sold worldwide since 2008, it is now officially the best-selling Volvo of all time. Chapeau, 240 – you were great. But the XC60 is greater. At least in sales – and yes, it required two generations to achieve this.

Scandinavian Recipe for Success with Global Appeal

What started in Europe in 2008 is now also rolling off the line in Chengdu – and not in small numbers. The XC60 is Volvo's first true global model. Built in Sweden and China, sold worldwide – demand dictates. And apparently, there's no end in sight for that demand.

In 2024, the XC60 claimed the title of the best-selling plug-in hybrid in Europe. In Germany, 13,052 new registrations hit the roads – a market share of 6.8% in this drive class. That's enough for first place among all volume and premium manufacturers. And thanks to up to 80 kilometers of purely electric range (WLTP combined), the XC60 saves not only CO₂ but also a lot of fuel stops.

Volvo 240: 19 Years of Legend – and Built 2.68 Million Times

A small tribute to the predecessor: The Volvo 240 was produced from 1974 to 1993 in Torslanda, Kalmar, and Ghent. A total of 2,685,171 times. The last icon left the plant halls in Torslanda on May 5, 1993 – where the XC60 is also produced today. The circle thus closes.

Safety Remains a Family Matter

The 240 was a pioneer in crash safety – with crumple zones, reinforced passenger cabin, side impact protection (SIPS), and the world's first integrated child seat (1978). The XC60? Continues the tradition – only digitally.

Since 2008, City Safety has been standard equipment – at that time the first automatic emergency braking system for low speeds. In 2017, another asset was added with Oncoming Lane Mitigation: Detects oncoming traffic and actively intervenes in steering. Even today, the XC60 is one of the safest vehicles in its class – with a complete range of driver assistance and occupant protection systems.

Not only for taxi drivers is the XC60 more than a bestseller – it's a hybrid with a bridging function. To further affirm its commitment to the taxi industry, Volvo Car Germany GmbH now offers a new highlight for a limited time: The Volvo Taxi Package free until the end of the year

Since mid-2024, Volvo Car Germany GmbH has been cooperating with the Federal Association of Taxis and Rental Cars e.V. and the Taxi and Rental Car Association Germany e.V. in the distribution of taxi and rental vehicles in the premium segment. Members of these associations and the affiliated state associations can receive lucrative taxi discounts through these partnerships. Whether mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or fully electric – there are attractive conditions for all engine variants for taxis and rental cars.

Commitment to the Taxi Industry

To further affirm its commitment to the taxi industry, Volvo Car Germany GmbH now offers a new highlight for a limited time: Anyone who orders a new Volvo taxi or a new Volvo rental car from a German Volvo passenger car dealer between November 01, 2024, and the end of 2024 will receive the taxi / rental car package for free.

With this free addition worth a gross of 4,165 euros, the customer gets a mirror taxi meter or mile counter from Hale or Semitron, a taxi LED roof sign with silent taxi alarm, an emergency alarm system, and a roof sign switch. Additionally, the conformity assessment with initial calibration, an initial inspection according to the ordinance on the operation of motor vehicle companies in passenger transport (BOKraft), and appropriate tariff programming are included. Upon customer request, the vehicle can also receive a full wrap in Light Ivory (RAL1015) for an additional charge. The vehicle is therefore turnkey and ready for immediate use upon delivery.

Volvo Car Germany cooperates with the largest German taxi associations. Members benefit from discounts on vehicles and conversions and have almost free choice of model and engine.

Anyone who decides on a model from the Swedish premium automotive brand now benefits from attractive conditions. Volvo Car Germany, as the responsible importer, has concluded a framework agreement with the two large German taxi associations "Federal Association of Taxis and Rental Cars e.V." (BVTM) and "Taxi and Rental Car Association Germany e.V." (TMV). Through the almost nationwide cooperation, members enjoy discounts on vehicles and conversions.

Whether single entrepreneur or fleet operator, with the partnership agreed at the end of July 2024, Volvo is taking its long-standing commitment to the taxi industry to the next level. The path to owning your own taxi is quick and straightforward: The Swedish premium automotive manufacturer offers a complete package. At the nearest contractual partner, interested parties can choose from almost the complete range of models and drive types – from the compact SUV to the spacious wagon, from mild hybrid to pure electric drive.

Professional Expansion According to Personal Needs

Once the desired vehicle is found, Volvo takes care of the turnkey expansion. In addition to a mirror taxi meter or odometer, for example, a taxi LED roof sign with silent taxi alarm, an emergency alarm system, and a roof sign switch are installed. Upon request, a high-quality full wrap in the "Taxi" color Light Ivory (RAL 1015) is also done.

    25hours Hotel guests don't need a taxi – Volvo EX30 for free

    Go on a discovery tour with the new Volvo EX30: Volvo Car Germany has launched an exclusive cooperation with the 25hours Hotels. Drive a Volvo for a day – and save the taxi fare.

    At various locations in Germany, guests will now have the fully electric compact SUV Volvo EX30 available for free use. The 25hours Hotel The Circle in Cologne will start things off, with other cities like Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, and Munich to follow. According to Bruno Marti, EVP of Brand Marketing at 25hours Hotels, the concept of 25hours Hotels offers smart answers to the demands of an urban, cosmopolitan traveler – the provision of the Volvo EX30 underscores this approach.

    Whether a private visit or a business stay, those checking into a 25hours Hotel remain mobile without having to organize a taxi, Uber, or rental car. Guests can simply use a Volvo EX30 and experience its unrestricted everyday practicality themselves – for up to one day. The reservation is made conveniently online, and the car key is provided at the reception, where a brief introduction to the vehicle is also given.

    "Our smallest Volvo makes the next big move: After our 24-hour test drive campaign within the German Volvo partner network and the major Volvo Germany tour in the summer with nine stops, the new partnership with the 25hours Hotels marks the next step in further expanding our visibility and perception as a leading e-mobility brand," explains Herrik van der Gaag, Managing Director of Volvo Car Germany GmbH.

    Currently, there are a total of 16 25hours Hotels in the German-speaking area as well as in Paris (France), Florence (Italy), Dubai (UAE), and Copenhagen (Denmark), created in collaboration with different designers. Each hotel thus boasts an individual style and unique details and offers a colorful array of contemporary services alongside accommodation and breakfast – from restaurants, bars, and cafés to carefully curated shop offerings. According to Manager Marti, the Volvo mobility offer is the perfect addition to this.

    At the start of the cooperation, Frank Schuran, Director CX and Marketing Operations at Volvo Car Germany GmbH, and Bruno Marti, EVP of Brand Marketing at 25hours Hotels, formulated the joint direction of the partnership:

    Volvo taxis for TMV members at special conditions

    When purchasing a Volvo, there will now be special prices for taxi and rental car companies that are organized in the TMV. Authorized dealers offer discounts on many combustion, hybrid, and electric models.

    Specifically, this means: For the models with combustion engines Volvo XC90, Volvo S90, Volvo V90, Volvo XC60, Volvo XC40 / EX40, there is a 23 percent discount. Volvo grants a 26 percent discount on the plug-in hybrids of the respective series. The Volvo V90 Cross Country gets a 23 percent discount for the combustion variant and an additional 13 percent for the Battery Electric Vehicle on the Volvo XC40 / EX40.

    The currently available Volvo models with a taxi/rental car conversion at the factory are:

    • Volvo V90 as Plug-in Hybrid Gasoline (Engine T6 AWD and T8 AWD)
    • Volvo XC40 as Mild-Hybrid Gasoline (Engine B3 and B4)
    • Volvo EX40 as a fully electric vehicle (Engine Single Engine, Single Engine Extended, and Twin Engine)
    • Volvo XC60 as Mild-Hybrid Gasoline (Engine B5 AWD) and Plug-in Hybrid Gasoline (Engine T6 AWD and T8 AWD)
    • Volvo XC90 as Plug-in Hybrid Gasoline (Engine T8 AWD)
    • The models Volvo S90 and Volvo V90 Cross Country are no longer available for order from the factory and are only available in some dealer stocks.

    Volvo internally informs its authorized dealers, the TMV its regional associations and member companies. Taxi and rental car companies that are members through the affiliated regional associations and their subordinate divisions are eligible to purchase.

    Electric taxis: Volvo presents six-seater luxury van

    On the important Chinese market, the Swedish brand, which is owned by a Chinese group, unveiled the battery-electric six-seater Volvo EM90.

    Volvo, the Swedish brand, calls the new luxurious six-seater EM90, which it presented in China on November 12, 2023, a "fully electric premium van." Geely, the parent company, is based there and expects strong demand for its new luxurious vehicle. Therefore, it is only available for order there at first. Volvo has not yet announced when the potentially high five-digit price will be available in Germany's configurator.

    The new fully electric van is powered by a very large 116 kWh battery, which, according to the initial press release, drives an electric motor with an output of 200 kW/272 hp. The battery can reportedly be charged from 10 to 80 percent of its capacity in less than 30 minutes at high-power fast-charging stations.

    Volvo does not provide specific figures for the onboard network or the onboard charger for slow AC charging, nor for the range measured according to the current WLTP standard applicable here.

    Despite 19- or 20-inch wheels, the new flagship is supposed to ride very smoothly thanks to a two-chamber air suspension. Very good sound insulation and "road noise suppression" are also intended to contribute to a very high level of driving comfort. Of course, the van is equipped in the passenger compartment with "lounge seats," similar to those found in the Kia EV9 or the new hybrid van from Lexus. In the Volvo EM90, one can also be entertained by a screen integrated into the roof.

    An electric taxi also provides bright moments at night

    In the new large electric SUV EX90, Volvo introduces a new interior lighting system with LED, which is supposed to provide natural and fatigue-free light during night driving.

    As part of an advertising strategy, which in the case of a Swedish brand one might have to call "reindeer salami tactic," Volvo is gradually revealing more and more details about the new large electric SUV Volvo EX90. Holger Schmidt, the taxi contact person of the brand, is already hoping for its taxi future.

    The latest detail should be of interest to taxi and rental car drivers who often work at night and therefore deserves mention here. The electric "Swedish bomber" is said to come standard with 72 "Sunlike LEDs," providing natural light in the interior from dusk on. Unlike the LEDs used before, they are supposed to produce more natural light with higher color intensity and lower reflections. The suppression of blue light components is intended to counteract eye fatigue and reduce headaches in combination with flicker-free LED lighting.

    The "Sunlike LEDs" are not only to be installed in the headliner but also on the floor, in doors, and in the trunk. While the Volvo EX90 and the related Polestar 3 are the first production vehicles with these light sources, they have long been used in homes, hospitals, schools, museums, and horticulture, Volvo reports.

    Electric taxis: Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric can do more and charge faster

    The compact SUV received a larger battery and can now charge at fast-charging stations with up to 200 kW.

    For the model year 2023, Volvo has some updates for the compact SUV XC40 Pure Electric that might also interest taxi and rental car operators. The most important is certainly that the model with rear-wheel drive now comes with a lithium-ion battery with a usable storage capacity of 82 kWh. It is called "Single Motor Extended Range" and is supposed to provide a combined range of up to 490 to 516 kilometers according to the current measurement method WLTP. For the still available base model with a 67 kWh battery, this value is 438 to 461 kilometers.

    For taxi and rental car operations, it is also positive that both versions can now be charged at DC fast-charging stations with up to 200 kW. This should mean that charging from 10 to 80 percent capacity for the larger battery takes only 27 minutes, while it would take 71 minutes at 50 kW charging power.

    With the model year change, the Swedes have switched models without all-wheel drive from the previous front-wheel to rear-wheel drive. The base model with "Single Motor" offers a new electric motor with 175 kW/238 hp and thus three percent more power than previously with front-wheel drive.

    The variant with rear-wheel drive and higher range has an electric motor with an output of 185/252 hp. The all-wheel drive with the suffix "Twin Motor" always has the 82 kWh battery. Its two electric motors deliver 110 kW/150 hp at the front axle and 190 kW/258 hp at the rear axle. All variants have the same mixed tires with 19-inch wheels in the basic configuration, whose rims have reportedly been aerodynamically optimized.

    The variant with rear-wheel drive and a larger battery (Single Motor / Extended Range), which is likely to be particularly interesting for the taxi and rental car industry, is available starting from the equipment level "Core," the second of a total of four levels. The starting price is 44,538 euros (prices excluding VAT). The all-wheel drive is available only from the second-highest equipment "Plus," starting at 50,379 euros.

    Interested taxi and rental car operators can download the current price list from November 2022 as a PDF file in the download section of this report. They can order the series through Volvo's conversion partner ADLER Taxameter & Funkservice in Munich with a free taxi or rental car package, which also includes the taximeter and odometer as well as conformity assessment. Only the wrapping is extra.

    According to Holger Schmidt, the taxi contact person of the brand, the taxi discount for both battery variants of the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric with rear-wheel drive is 10 percent, while there is no taxi discount for the all-wheel drive.

    Volvo's new flagship might also cruise to taxi stands

    The electrically powered seven-seater Volvo EX90 is also planned as a service vehicle, which improves the chances of a taxi or rental car conversion.

    With the stature of the XC90, once again with seven seats, but a completely new platform with electric drive, Volvo presented the new EX90 on November 9, 2022. As the name already suggests, the third generation of the Swedish flagship is fully electric. The electric vehicle has a newly developed battery in the underbody with a capacity of 111 kWh, allowing a combined range of up to 600 kilometers measured according to the WLTP standard. At fast-charging stations, the vehicle can reportedly charge with up to 250 kW. Charging from 10 to 80 percent is supposed to take only 30 minutes. The market will first see two all-wheel-drive versions with 300 kW/408 hp or 380 kW/517 hp.

    During the presentation, the management and development staff of the Swedish brand of the Chinese Geely group emphasized the extensive array of ultrasonic and radar sensors, many cameras, and the lidar, which are supposed to make the large Volvo the safest model yet. The lidar sensor, located similarly to prototypes of self-driving cars above the front camera on the roof, somewhat resembles a strongly shrunken roof sign of a London taxi.

    The Volvo EX90 rolls on impressive 22-inch wheels. Its interior is supposed to offer seven full-sized seats. The two in the third row can be folded into the floor, creating a flat loading area. As for the flexibility of the second row, the virtual presentation did not provide any insight, nor were there images of the spaciousness in the back and third row. The vehicle will first be produced in the USA and then also in China.

    Holger Schmidt, the taxi contact person from Volvo, said at the European Taxi Fair on request from taxi today that the Volvo EX90 is also planned as a service vehicle. Therefore, he expects good chances that a conversion to a taxi or rental car will be possible on this platform. Although the vehicle won't be cheap, the predecessor XC90 is also sold as a taxi or rental car, even though the discount is not as high as for other Volvo models and the taxi or rental car package is not provided for free. Holger Schmidt is also Volvo's contact for emergency vehicles and is an active firefighter himself.

    Volvo lifts its electric taxi XC40 Recharge Pure Electric

    For the model year 2023, the compact SUV will receive a slightly retouched grille.

    The compact electric taxi Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric receives a facelift for the model year 2023. It primarily consists of adopting the closed grille from the recently introduced electric model C40, which is essentially a coupe version of the XC40.

    For the model year 2023, the Swedish brand of the Chinese Geely group has also changed the offering structure for all models. Customers will be able to choose from various equipment levels and complement them with options "that best suit their personal needs," writes Volvo Cars. The focus on pre-selected variants increases price transparency and reduces the complexity of the product range.

    The Swedes make it clear that the new offering structure aims to simplify the online configuration process. Thus, it is another step towards selling over the Internet. This path has been taken from the beginning by the sister brand Polestar, also in the taxi business. They only rely on collaboration with Volvo dealers for service.

    Volvo Cars offers the Volvo XC40 Recharge with taxi or rental car equipment installed by ADLER Taxameter and Funktechnik in Munich. The brand supports both the front-wheel-drive and the all-wheel version with a taxi discount of 13 percent plus the BAFA funding. They only offer their free taxi or rental car equipment, including a taximeter or odometer, for the front-wheel-drive version.

    In the Hamburg "Zukunftstaxi" project, five Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric vehicles are soon to be deployed. Perhaps then they can also be stylishly charged at a Swedish furniture store.

    Electric taxis: Volvo and Polestar want to sweeten the charging experience

    The two Swedish brands want to recharge vehicle passengers' batteries with coffee, cinnamon buns, and Scandinavian flair at a power stop.

    With clever marketing, the Swedish brands Volvo and Polestar have managed to distract from the fact that they are actually backed by a Chinese group called Geely, which also has stakes in the Daimler group. Even with their cars, they outwardly and inwardly emphasize Scandinavian flair, and the marketing now even includes the first charging station.

    It is called "Powerstop" and is situated at the Irschenberg exit of the famously congested holiday route A 9 south of Munich, exactly where a stop amid hopeful Alpine scenery is advisable due to frequent traffic jams. Volvo and Polestar have not settled down in the fries haze of a hamburger joint but rather in the coffee aroma of the Rosenheim coffee roasting company Dinzler, well-known in southern Bavaria. Starting in April 2022, their coffee specialties can be enjoyed with cinnamon buns, presumably baked and reheated according to a Swedish recipe. The Swedes speak of a typical Swedish coffee break called "Fika," which seems to be almost sacred to their compatriots.

    The main purpose of the new power stop is to charge electric vehicles at four fast-charging stations with 150 kW charging capacity. Economical drivers of electric taxis and rental cars will be pleased to know that they can use these stations for free starting February 12, 2022, initially until the end of April.

    In the pavilions, one can also learn about the models of the two brands. Either spontaneously or with prior registration, they can also be taken for test drives.

    SUV taxis: Volvo recall for XC 60 and XC90

    The turbocharger of the diesel models used as taxis can cause quite a bit of trouble.

    Since the end of October 2021, a recall campaign from Volvo has been underway, affecting 1,650 SUVs of the types XC60 and XC90 in Germany. In models built between mid-May and early September 2020, parts in the engine could be damaged in the event of a failure, which could lead to an oil leak and engine failure. This was reported by the industry service kfz-rueckrufe.de, citing a spokesperson for Volvo Germany.

    The newsletter does not specify whether the affected vehicles will initially only be inspected in the workshop or if repairs will be carried out on all of them immediately. Therefore, the duration of the workshop stay cannot be quantified yet. Volvo Cars' customer service cannot provide technical details by phone. They refer inquiring customers to the nearest Volvo dealer. They should ideally mention the internal manufacturer code "R10098" referred to in the newsletter. According to Nico Ganzer, who runs the platform and creates its newsletter, Volvo's response sounded as if the turbocharger would generally be replaced during the campaign, which certainly cannot be done within a few minutes.

    The XC60 and the larger XC90 are also offered as taxis in Germany. Since the brand has been very active in the taxi business since 2019, it is assumed that taxis and rental cars are also affected by the recall campaign.     Electric taxis: Volvo assistant to optimize XC40 range

    A range assistant is supposed to help convert the battery capacity of the compact SUV into the highest possible range via an app.

    With the next over-the-air update, operators of electric taxis of the type Volvo XC 40 Recharge Pure Electric will receive an app uploaded that is supposed to help their drivers save precious electricity. A pleasant side effect will definitely be that it displays the remaining range in kilometers, while the car previously showed it in percentages.

    The "Range Assistant App" is supposed to improve battery management and regeneration performance, among other things. Additionally, the range optimization also impacts climate control management. The driver is supposed to receive easy-to-follow recommendations via the app to increase range through driving style and adjusted speed.

    The update is to be uploaded by the end of October 2021. Not only the app but also the central display in the taxi is supposed to inform drivers that a software update is being performed. Volvo plans to gradually roll out further improvements to this app as well.

    Volvo's electric taxi also available with front-wheel drive

    The compact SUV Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric can now also be ordered with front-wheel drive, making it significantly cheaper than the all-wheel drive version.

    After the all-wheel drive version already tested by taxi today, Volvo is now offering its very compact compact SUV XC40 Recharge Pure Electric with only front-wheel drive. It is powered by an electric motor with 170 kW/231 hp, ensuring that a taxi of this size will not feel underpowered.

    With its 70 kWh battery, up to 400 kilometers of range should be possible according to Volvo. This value according to the current WLTP measurement standard is still estimated because homologation is still pending. The batteries are supposed to be rechargeable from 10 to 80 percent of their capacity at fast-charging stations in about 32 minutes. Volvo does not specify the charging power of the stations this refers to. Like the all-wheel-drive model, the front-wheel-drive vehicle is allowed to tow trailers weighing up to 1,500 kilograms.

    Cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors forming the basis of several driver assistance systems are standard on the electric Swede as is the new infotainment system based on the Android Automotive operating system. Unfortunately, the electricity-saving integrated heat pump is not available in the base trim "Core" but only in the higher trims "Plus" and "Pro."

    The entry-level prices are 45,080 euros for the Core (prices incl. VAT), 48,080 euros for the Plus, and 52,080 euros for the Pro. The manufacturer's share of the environmental bonus of 3,000 euros has already been considered. Furthermore, a "manufacturer's bonus" of 570 euros has already been deducted.

    Electric taxis: Volvo and Polestar cooperate with Plugsurfing

    The two closely related brands want to unify the charging conditions for their customers during fast charging.

    Taxi and rental car operators who wish to use an electric vehicle must anticipate longer overland journeys, during which they need to fast charge using direct current. They often grapple with opaque pricing structures and the gut feeling that fast charging can always come at a cost. Volvo and Polestar want to address this through a cooperation with the charging service provider Plugsurfing.

    Volvo has agreed with Plugsurfing that from July 1, 2021, all existing customers of its purely electric Recharge models can charge at all 340 fast-charging points of the Ionity consortium across Europe under unified conditions for a year. For new customers, this applies to the first twelve months of vehicle ownership.

    The agreement stipulates a rate of 0.35 euros/kWh. This rate applies whether using the Plugsurfing card or the Plugsurfing app.

    The same rate has also been agreed upon by the closely related electric brand Polestar with Plugsurfing for users of their mid-class fastback sedan Polestar 2. The contract with Plugsurfing is already included in the purchase contract of the vehicle. At Polestar as well, payment can be made with either the card or the app from Plugsurfing. Unlike Volvo, the agreement for all previous Polestar 2 owners and new buyers is only valid if they order the car by December 31, 2021.

    It is important to note that the reduced price is not credited if you scan the QR code at a charging station. Instead, one must update it in the Plugsurfing app.

    Volvo cooperates with DiDi for Robotaxis

    The partnership is intended to kick off a long-term collaboration to make robotaxis market-ready. Initial tests with retrofitted SUV XC90s in Shanghai were reportedly successful.

    Volvo Cars, the Swedish subsidiary of the Chinese Geely Group, has announced further advancement in automated driving. As part of a strategic cooperation, they aim to deliver self-driving cars based on the full-size SUV Volvo XC90 to DiDi Autonomous Driving, the autonomous driving business unit of the Chinese mobility technology platform DiDi Chuxing. The vehicles will be used in a self-driving test fleet and are specially modified models equipped with the necessary assistance and support systems for automated steering and braking. Together with the Chinese partner, additional software and hardware will be integrated to fully prepare the vehicle for autonomous driving, it is further stated. As one of the very first vehicles, the luxury SUV features the company's new hardware platform called DiDi Gemini.

    Perspective: Starting signal for long-term partnership

    The cooperation strengthens Volvo Cars' position as the preferred partner and supplier of vehicles for self-driving fleets, they state in Gothenburg. This is particularly due to the company's exceptional expertise and experience in automotive safety. The combination of assistance and safety systems with DiDi Autonomous Driving's self-driving system predestined the vehicle as a robotaxi, ultimately without a driver to intervene if necessary, the Swedes further outline. They also aim for a long-term partnership based on the current agreement. DiDi wants to gradually expand its autonomous test fleets in China and the USA and expand commercial robotaxi operations. As a technology platform for "Shared Mobility", the company uses its expertise in network operations and its large stock of real driving data to develop commercial autonomous transport services in collaboration with car manufacturers.

    Initial successful tests

    Volvo Cars had already provided the Chinese with several Volvo XC60s for a pilot program in Shanghai in 2020. In certain regions of the Chinese metropolis, users of the DiDi app could book a ride with the autonomously driving robotaxis. However, the vehicles were accompanied by a safety driver and an engineer, the provider describes.

    "The strategic collaboration with DiDi Autonomous Driving is another affirmation of our ambition to become the partner of choice for ride-hailing companies worldwide.     Volvo Taxi XC60 gets refreshed for model year 2022

    Externally, little changes and nothing in terms of engines, but quite a bit is happening with the infotainment system of the compact SUV also available as a taxi.

    Starting from the beginning of production for the model year 2022 in May 2021, the compact SUV Volvo XC60 will receive a new infotainment system. It is now based on an Android user interface developed in collaboration with Google, which should be more intuitively operable due to its proximity to smartphones.

    Optionally, many commands can be entered via the Google Assistant voice control, which could also represent an improvement over the previously quite schematic voice control. As before, you can use it to control not only the navigation and phone but also the climate control and audio system. Also new is a "second-generation digital instrument display." It should be easier to read.

    In addition to a multitude of already existing driver assistance systems, a rear parking aid with brake intervention is now added. It engages the brakes when reversing as soon as another vehicle or a pedestrian approaches.

    The XC60 still comes with two unchanged diesel engine options with 2-liter four-cylinders and a mild hybrid system. They deliver 145 kW/197 hp with front or all-wheel drive or 173 kW/235 hp only in conjunction with all-wheel drive. All have an eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

    Volvo's smallest model seems quite small as a taxi

    As a plug-in hybrid, the Volvo XC40 Recharge combines fine technology with a comfortable workplace, but in a body that is quite tight for a taxi.

    Picked up in frosty temperatures, driven through wintry landscapes for two weeks, and parked again on a snow-covered courtyard: The Volvo XC40 Recharge as a plug-in hybrid faced challenges to impress in "taxi today"'s test from a taxi perspective.

    It pleased its driver with its firmly padded, absolutely long-distance-capable seating, which warmed up quickly in the morning. The climate control quickly understood to blow the windshield free at the highest blower setting, and the spray nozzles attached to the wiper arms provided clear vision quickly in messy weather. At night, the standard LED headlights, their high beam assistant, and the continuously illuminated controls were convincing.

    The well-insulated three-cylinder with 1.5 liters of displacement was almost inaudible even after a cold start, and the typical shaking and rumbling of this design was completely absent. Even when the drive battery of the plug-in hybrid was only recharged to a minimum through recuperation during a trip, the XC40 Recharge often set off gently on electricity before the combustion engine started softly, and the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission shifted gears almost imperceptibly.

    Because the battery cannot be fast-charged on the road and two hotels visited did not have wallboxes, it was charged only twice in two weeks and for a total distance of just under 2,000 kilometers. It took around three hours and, according to the display, provided about 40 kilometers of electric travel. However, this is only achieved if one accelerates cautiously on country roads, then glides foresightfully and maintains a maximum speed of 90 km/h. Predominantly on very comfortably traveled highways at speeds of up to 130 km/h, an average consumption of 7.5 liters of Super E10 was achieved. Since the fuel gauge warns early, the 48-liter tank requires refueling stops quite early.

    Since Volvo no longer offers a diesel engine for its smallest taxi model, the plug-in hybrid is the only alternative to a pure gasoline engine for frequent drivers. They should know that the XC40 is significantly narrower than the XC60, which is more spacious than it seems. In the rear of the XC40, two adults already quickly find themselves up against the front seatbacks, which larger drivers can only counteract on the passenger side with their deep footwell through appropriate seat adjustment. Due to the high center tunnel and hard backrest, adults cannot use the middle seat. When folding down the asymmetrically split rear seat bench, an almost flat loading surface is only created if the front seat is moved forward slightly, because the rear headrests cannot be lowered. Lastly, handling multiple large suitcases is challenging.

    Volvo rounds off its taxi offer at the lower end

    Volvo Car Germany GmbH expands its taxi offering with its most compact SUV, the XC40. The five-seater is offered with a 25 percent discount. Additionally, like usual for the brand, the taxi package, which even includes the taximeter, is free of charge. For the plug-in hybrid models XC40 T4/T5 Recharge, the taxi package is also free, but the discount is 20 percent for them. This information comes from the taxi conditions of Volvo, which "taxi today" requested for a market overview of the taxi conditions of all active passenger car and van manufacturers. It will appear in issue 12/2020.

    The Swedes do not offer the XC40 with a diesel engine. The gasoline engine is offered with front and all-wheel drive in four variants with an 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The XC40 Recharge Plug-in Hybrid has a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. It is on the list of eligible electric vehicles from the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA).

    So far, Volvo has offered the S90 sedan, the V90 wagon, its off-road variant Cross Country, and the compact SUV XC60 with a free taxi package and respectable discounts. The flagship SUV XC90 is also supported, although its taxi package is chargeable. In all cases, a diesel engine can be combined with an 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

    Volvo's new taxi addition is an attractive alternative

    The compact SUV Volvo XC60 is characterized by pleasantly high entrances, a comfortably high seating position, and plenty of space for four passengers, as well as a well-designed luggage compartment. The taxi contact Dietmar Ruhe provided it to "taxi today" with the 2-liter diesel engine, eight-speed automatic, all-wheel drive that engages automatically, and leather upholstery in the B4 AWD variant. His conversion partner, ADLER Taxameter & Funktechnik, had installed a HALE mirror taximeter and provided a roof sign from Kienzle.

    The very powerful 2-liter diesel, with 145 kW/197 hp, is smooth-running and well-insulated. It works harmoniously with the softly-switching eight-speed torque converter automatic and consumed an average of 6.6 liters of diesel fuel over 100 kilometers. The Swedes have tuned the suspension to be pleasantly firm yet comfortable.

    The passenger compartment offers plenty of space for four large passengers, as long as the front seat is not fully back and down simultaneously. The middle seat is a compromise due to the center tunnel, although the bench is quite wide. Two integrated child seats, between which not only a very slim adult can sit, are also offered by the SUV. Its asymmetrically split rear seat bench can be folded down to create a flat loading surface.

    Volvo also introduces the XC60 as a taxi

    The compact SUV, like the other models, is converted into a taxi at ADLER Taxameter & Funktechnik GmbH.

    Volvo expanded its taxi and rental car offer in early December 2019 to include the compact SUV named XC60. It is also equipped with a taxi or rental car package by ADLER Taxameter & Funktechnik GmbH in Munich. For the taxi, it includes a mirror taximeter from HALE or Semitron, the taxi alarm system with silent alarm, the taxi roof sign, the rate programming, the conformity check, and the initial calibration as well as the inspection according to Paragraph 42 BOKraft. For rental cars, the roof sign is omitted and they get a mirror distance meter, where the customer can also choose between the brands HALE and Semitron.

    Optional taxis and rental cars can also be foil-wrapped. Deliverable options include various antennas and radios, a radio hands-free system, and artificial leather seat covers. Volvo launches the XC60 with a 25 percent discount and a free taxi package.

    The base vehicle is also available with front-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission and the D3 diesel engine with 110 kW/150 hp. For the D4 diesel engine with 140 kW/190 hp, both front- and four-wheel drive can be optionally combined with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

    With the Volvo XC60, the Swedes are already bringing their second SUV in addition to the "flagship" XC90 and the first competitor to the compact SUVs Qashqai and X-Trail from Nissan. Nissan's SUVs and the Mitsubishi Outlander were the only compact SUVs available with a taxi package (in this case by INTAX) until Volvo's market entry. German competitors do not currently want to offer a taxi in this segment or make one retrofittable, although there is a certain demand for the VW Tiguan Allspace and the Mercedes-Benz GLB in particular.

    Volvo: Taxi enthusiast takes over sales

    Volvo Car Germany is restructuring its management and promoting Axel Zurhausen from Head of Sales for Large Customers and Authorities to German Sales Manager.

    As of January 1, 2020, Volvo Car Germany will reorganize its management. The 56-year-old Thomas Bauch remains the managing director but additionally takes over the new area “Sales and Future Business Models”.

    The previous sales manager Ralph Kranz (47) will head the new business unit "Customer Retention and Used Cars", which brings together customer service and the used car business. New to the management board are Torben Meyer (41) and Axel Zurhausen (50). Meyer heads customer service and reports to Ralph Kranz, while Zurhausen takes responsibility for traditional sales and reports to Managing Director Thomas Bauch.

    Since 2017, Axel Zurhausen has been responsible for sales to large customers and authorities. In this role, he also supported Volvo's taxi coordinator Dietmar Ruhe in rebuilding the German taxi business. Among other things, Zurhausen also represented his brand at the European Taxi Fair 2017.

    The Volvo V90 Diesel is a comfortable taxi

    With its space, drive system, and ride comfort, the big Swede need not hide as a taxi from a T-model.

    Well-insulated, smooth-running, and with an average consumption of 6.2 liters still economical, the “smallest” station wagon that Volvo offers as a taxi showed its merits. The Volvo V90 Diesel D3 extracts just 110 kW/150 hp from its 2-liter diesel engine, but with that power, the taxi is already well-motorized. The 320-newton meters of torque available between 1,750 and 3,000 rpm move the Swedish car, which is already 1,764 kilograms when empty, very gracefully when paired with the smooth-shifting eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

    The high ride comfort is underscored by the low wind noise and the good suspension calibration despite the optional 19-inch wheels. As is common in the upper mid-range, inconsiderate front passengers can cramp the rear passengers, but with some consideration, large people can sit comfortably behind one another just like in a T-model of the E-Class. With the star-studded wagon, the middle place with integrated three-point belt is also comparable. It is uncomfortable primarily in the Volvo because the incorporated center armrest presses uncomfortably hard on the back, and wider figures on the right and left feel the belt buckles. The retractable headrest of the middle seat can be extended far enough for tall figures, and their legs can be stretched under the front seats on either side of the cardan tunnel.

    The V90 is not quite up to date in terms of variability: First, you can only release its rear seat bench from the rear door and fold it down, and second, it creates a slightly upward-sloping loading floor. At least it has no step. A nice feature is the luggage compartment cover that moves up when opening the power-operated tailgate and lays flat again when closing.

    Volvo and Uber present autonomous driving XC90

    The Swedish parent of the hopefully started German taxi men presents a production-ready SUV for use with the taxi-shock Uber.

    After a collaborative development, the Swedish-Chinese automaker Volvo and the US ride-hailing service Uber presented a Volvo XC90 as the first production-ready autonomously driving vehicle on June 12, 2019. It is said to have various sensors, some of which are conspicuously mounted on the roof, and multiple redundant safety systems.

    Uber currently uses such vehicles with a "Mission Specialist" on board, the Swedes write. Volvo aims to offer a similar basic vehicle concept as an autonomously driving vehicle in the "2020s". However, it is intended for autonomous driving in precisely defined areas such as ring roads or highways.

    Volvo signed a delivery agreement with Uber in 2016 for "tens of thousands" of autonomously driving basic vehicles over the coming years. Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson explained at the presentation that the collaboration with Uber underscores the ambition to "be the preferred supplier for the world's leading ride-hailing providers".

    The best taxi of the year 2019 comes from Volvo

    The "Sweden Taxi" Volvo V90 Diesel was favored by 40 taxi operators who tested 14 current taxi models from 10 brands for taxi suitability in Munich on May 24/25, 2019.

    After concluding Europe’s largest taxi test on May 25, 2019, the Volvo V 90 Diesel received the best overall rating among 14 taxi models presented by 10 brands. It can now boast the title "Best Taxi 2019".

    In the vehicle category "Sedan / Station Wagon", the Ford Mondeo Hybrid Wagon was rated best for economy. In terms of functionality, the Toyota Camry Hybrid and the Volvo V90 Diesel were tied with the exact same score, resulting in two winners for the first time. In terms of comfort, the Lexus ES 300h, also a hybrid model, led. Where the Volvo V90 Diesel stood out particularly was in securing first place in the Emotion category.

    In the vehicle category SUV / Van, the Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid was the leader in economy. The Peugeot Rifter BlueHDi 130 EAT8 received the best score in functionality, positively surprising many testers. The Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid was impressive in terms of comfort due to its quiet drive, while its luggage compartment was generally described as rather tight. In terms of emotion, the Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid once again appealed to the most testers.

    To better assess the large-capacity taxis based on transporters, their slightly different functionality was evaluated separately. Here, the Fiat Talento Kombi L2 took the lead before the Ford Tourneo Custom L2 Bus.

    At the end, the winners gathered for a group photo with Publishing Director Christoph Huss (far left in the photo) and Managing Director Bert Brandenburg (far right). The manufacturers based there did not participate. Many taxi operators could not understand this and speculated that Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles might have shied away from the competition.

    Volvo introduces mild hybrid also in the taxi model XC90

    In the coming months, mild hybrids are set to be introduced into Volvo's model range. They can recover braking energy via a brake-by-wire system and inject it back during acceleration. This is intended to make them particularly economical on the road. The large SUV named XC90, which can also be ordered as a taxi, and the compact SUV named XC60 will take the lead.

    Under real driving conditions, the Swedes promise fuel savings of up to 15 percent. The mild hybrids are identified by a "B" on the tailgate.

    Additional candidates for Taxi of the Year 2019

    After Toyota, Lexus, and Mitsubishi, Kia and Volvo have firmly registered with three taxis for the major taxi reader comparison test in May.

    At the beginning of the year, it seems that the taxi coordinators from Kia and Volvo have put their good intentions into action. Olaf Lucke, who oversees the taxi business at Kia, registered a Kia Ceed Sportswagon to participate in the test. It belongs to the compact station wagons.

    Dietmar Ruhe, who manages taxis at Volvo, has also promised a station wagon and additionally a sedan. He has registered the station wagon V90 and the notchback sedan S90, both from the upper mid-range. However, he has not yet confirmed the participation of the electrically operated London taxi with a hybrid drive, whose manufacturer LEVC, like Volvo, belongs to the Chinese Geely Group. According to previous information, this model is to be sold in Germany through Volvo dealers.

    Before Christmas, Volker Frank from Toyota had confirmed participation with three new taxis from Toyota and a new model from Lexus. Harro Wolheim from Mitsubishi also registered with his new large SUV Outlander PHEV, which, along with the Toyota and Lexus, has a hybrid drive.

    The field of maximum 50 taxi operators who can participate in the test is already occupied. However, the organization team from HUSS-VERLAG has already set up a waiting list.
