Rental cars are rarely electric - Norway leading the way

(dpa) Those who book a rental car rarely drive electrically, especially in typical vacation countries. But there are exceptions, because in the end it also depends on the availability.

Rental cars in most countries are very rarely electric. A recent analysis of bookings by billiger-mietwagen.de shows a share of only 2.1 percent last year, as the portal reports. However, the differences are enormous - and in comparison to 2023, there is a clear increase.

Electric Vehicle Registrations in Scandinavia Above Average

The study is based on bookings totaling ten million days from the years 2024 and 2023. They mainly came from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

"Decisive for the differences between the countries is likely the local availability," says Frieder Bechtel from billiger-mietwagen.de.

This is apparently particularly good in Norway and Sweden. Last year, 20.4 and 16.4 percent of rental cars booked through the portal were electric vehicles in those countries. Both countries - especially Norway - are also clearly above the European average in new electric vehicle registrations.

Other countries with particularly high shares of electric cars in rental car bookings in Europe are France, Belgium, and Switzerland with 8.6 percent, 7.1 percent, and 7.0 percent. Germany stands at 3.7 percent, which is clearly above the average of all bookings through the portal, which also includes non-European destinations.

Low Shares in Spain and Italy

In contrast, the bookings made in Italy with an electric share of 0.8 percent, in Spain with 1.1, or in the USA and Austria with 1.2 percent each, are far below average.

The figures do not directly reflect the rental car fleets in these countries, but the bookings at least give a good indication of what the situation is likely to be.

“When you compare the new registrations of electric cars with the bookings, you can see that electric vehicles are much less common in the rental market. In Norway, for example, nine out of ten new cars are electric but only two out of ten of the bookings we examined are.”

Rental cars are generally quite new, so unlike in the overall vehicle population, a large number of old vehicles do not impede the statistics here.

Skepticism on Vacation

However, there appears to be reservation among both the rental companies and the customers.

“Especially on vacation, there is skepticism towards electric cars because people are not willing to deal with things like charging stations in Spain, their locations, and the payment system,” says Bechtel. Among the rental companies, the attitude seems to be similar: “This is partly due to acquisition and repair costs as well as lower resale values, and partly because advantages in energy costs benefit the customers, not the rental companies.”

That the shares are nevertheless increasing, Bechtel attributes to the offer:

“In countries where the electric share of rental cars has risen significantly, the prices for them have decreased compared to combustion vehicles,” he says. “This is likely to have been a decisive factor. Possibly, rental companies are consciously trying to strengthen the utilization of their electric cars here.”
