Electric taxis as a model: Hamburg shows the way to an emission-free fleet.

Hamburg is pushing ahead with the transition of its taxi fleet to locally zero-emission powertrains. Since January 2025, according to the organizers, new taxi licenses are issued exclusively for vehicles with locally zero-emission powertrains. Already 750 electric taxis are in operation in Hamburg. In the long term, a fleet of around 3,000 vehicles is to be converted.

The measures are part of Hamburg Sustainability Week, which invites citizens and civil society actors to work on solutions to key sustainability issues. The aim of the event series is to accelerate local transformation and contribute to the global sustainability goals.

E-Taxi Day in the Courtyard of the Traffic Authority

On 1 July from 10:00 to 13:00 at Alter Steinweg 4 in 20459 Hamburg, an accessible exhibition is planned. In the courtyard of the Traffic Authority, a public “E-Taxi Day” is to take place. Manufacturers will present their electric taxi models there, and charging infrastructure providers will inform about special offers and tariffs for commercial use.

Additionally, a discussion round with the Transport Senator and other participants is planned. It will address the impacts of the propulsion switch on the city, business, climate, and air quality.

A broad alliance of industry, politics and business

The transition is supported by a broad alliance according to the program. In addition to vehicle manufacturers and charging infrastructure providers, authorities, policymakers, dispatch platforms, associations and taxi companies are involved. The industry provides a broad range of suitable vehicles, while the public sector provides funding instruments and regulatory frameworks.
