Webinar: Taxi dispatch centers between fixed fee and platform competition
Taxi dispatch centers in the DACH region are facing structural challenges. While global mobility platforms such as Uber or Bolt base their business models on commission-based revenues, many traditional dispatch centers continue to finance themselves through fixed monthly fees. This structure makes it difficult, in the assessment of industry observers, to provide variable budgets for marketing measures and driver incentives.
An additional competitive factor is the so-called multi-apping. According to a Bolt study from December 2024, up to 84 percent of drivers active there use several dispatch apps in parallel. Lyft's 2024 Economic Impact Report shows a share of 72 percent for its own driver network. For taxi dispatch centers, this means that connected drivers prefer orders from other platforms if they appear more attractive in the short term.
Switch from fixed-price to commission-based model
The software provider eCabs Technologies says it has experienced this development in its home market Malta. The company has operated a taxi dispatch center there since 2010 and responded in 2017 to Bolt's market entry. In 2018, eCabs switched the business model from fixed fees to a commission-based system.
Operational data from Malta show, according to the company, measurable effects. The cancellation rate fell from 14 percent to six percent. At the same time, order intake during peak times increased by 19 percent. Following the introduction of dynamic pricing, drivers' online hours also increased by 18 percent.
Results from partner projects
Also at partner centers in other countries, eCabs reports comparable effects according to its own statements. In Bucharest, ride volume during a summer campaign in 2025 rose by 14 percent, revenue by nine percent. With a Greek partner, the setup time for discount campaigns reduced from three days to 15 minutes. Initial tests showed eight percent more rides on promotion days. Moreover, it succeeded in reactivating previously inactive users by eleven percent through segmented campaigns.
