Automotive suppliers and IG Metall appeal to Chancellor Scholz
The managing directors and works council chairpersons of five major automotive suppliers are calling on Chancellor Olaf Scholz to support the automotive industry.
“Together with IG Metall, we are deeply concerned about the automotive location Germany,” write the executives and employee representatives from Bosch, Continental, Mahle, Schäffler, and the ZF Group in an open letter to the Chancellor, which is available to the German Press Agency. Initially, the "Handelsblatt" reported on it.
Since 2019, nearly 50,000 jobs have been cut in the supplier industry, it continues. A dramatic employment situation is expected in the coming months. IG Metall chairwoman Christiane Benner also signed the letter.
Signatories Demand Support for the Ramp-Up of E-Mobility
The industry is calling for political support to maintain Germany as a strong industrial location. Suppliers play a crucial role in the value creation and innovation of the German automotive industry.
A central point of the appeal is the perceived need by the suppliers to accelerate the ramp-up of electromobility. The companies have invested significantly in this technology, but the sluggish market launch threatens the profitability of these investments.
Securing Competitiveness
To secure competitiveness, suppliers advocate for tax relief and the expansion of charging infrastructure. At the same time, they call for more openness to technology and the consideration of CO2-neutral fuels from 2035.
“The current EU regulation on CO2 fleet limits sets very ambitious goals,” the authors write.
In order to achieve these, politics must create suitable framework conditions.
