Hamburg invests €700,000 in the further electrification of taxis.

(dpa/lno) The Senate is increasing funding for electric taxis. Financial subsidies are intended to accelerate the replacement of remaining internal-combustion vehicles and to secure operations with additional charging points.

Hamburg supports the expansion of the emissions-free taxi fleet with a further 700,000 euros. According to the transport authority, taxi companies receive 5,000 euros when switching from a combustion engine to an electric vehicle. For large-capacity taxis, 10,000 euros are provided, and for an E-Inclusion taxi with wheelchair transport, 20,000 euros. The funds are intended to accelerate the replacement of the remaining combustion-engine vehicles, as of the beginning of 2025 only emission-free taxis and rental cars may be newly registered.

Electrification is advancing

In the Hanseatic city, there are currently around 2,150 of the roughly 2,900 taxis still powered by internal combustion engines. At the start of the funding program five years ago, there were only 5 electric taxis in operation; now there are 750. According to the transport authority, more than 19,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide have already been saved through the switch. With full electrification, it expects annual savings of 25,000 tonnes by 2030.

Expansion of charging infrastructure

The share of zero-emission vehicles has now reached around a quarter of the fleet. To further stabilize operations, the number of exclusive charging stations for taxis should rise from 8 to at least 30 by the end of the year. (Source: dpa)
