Tesla starts production of the revised Model Y in Grünheide
The facility in Grünheide is Tesla's only production site in Europe and focuses exclusively on the assembly of the Model Y. The vehicle was once again the best-selling electric car worldwide last year. Nevertheless, Tesla had to record a decline in its global delivery numbers for the first time in 2024, although the company had achieved record figures in the last quarter.
The Importance of the Model Y for Tesla
The Model Y remains the most important model in the portfolio of the American electric car manufacturer. The swift production and delivery of the revised version are of central importance to Tesla. The vehicle was initially introduced to the Chinese market, the only major sales market that recorded growth last year.
While customers in China can already order the updated Model Y, Tesla has since expanded the ordering availability to other markets. For example, the first vehicles are expected to be delivered in Australia and New Zealand from May.
Start of Production in a Challenging Time
With the launch of the new model, Tesla sends an important signal. After years of steady growth, a slight decline in global market share was observed for the first time in 2024. Experts attribute this to increasing competition and market changes. The strategic importance of the European Gigafactory in Grünheide is thus growing, as it plays a central role in supplying the European market.
The successful implementation of the production start in Grünheide will be important for Tesla not only economically but also symbolically, to solidify its position in the highly competitive electric vehicle market.
