The number of newly concluded training contracts in the automotive sector reached its highest level in 20 years last year. In the occupation of "automotive mechatronics technician," 25,221 new training contracts were concluded, an increase of 7.2% compared to the previous year.

This is according to statistics from the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB). The reference date for the survey was September 30, 2024. The proportion of female automotive mechatronics technicians was 1,551, or around 6.2%. The profession is becoming increasingly attractive to women. According to the BIBB, automotive mechatronics technician is by far the most popular occupation among all training professions in Germany in terms of new enrollments.

Auto Industry is in Good Shape

The positive trend continued among automotive salespeople with 5,727 new trainees, which is 4.2% more than the previous year. The percentage of female trainees here is 39.5%.

"The auto industry has been seeing rising training numbers again in our two main training occupations since 2021," ZDK President Arne Joswig is pleased to announce. "The transformation of our industry towards alternative drives, combined with a high density of innovation, is attracting as many young people to dealerships and workshops as we haven't seen in 20 years. This shows: We are a forward-looking training and employer industry. Another reason for the success: Our association has been investing for many years in professional and target group-oriented youth marketing and in the continuous development of our training and further education professions."

Strategies for Promoting Young Talent

According to Joswig, dual vocational training is an important step to counter the shortage of skilled workers.

“However, training must not be a one-way street,” says the ZDK President. “Therefore, further education and the promotion of employees in the automotive trade are additional components to retain qualified professionals in our companies.”

Last year, the ZDK developed a skilled labor strategy that focuses on the further development of professionals, promotes modern job profiles, and targets groups such as career changers, women, college dropouts, and people with a migration background.

“It is evident that this strategy allows us to attract many people to our industry. We rely on targeted social media campaigns, webinars, workshops, and events.”

Overall, the automotive trade is currently training more than 92,000 young people in technical and commercial professions. Additionally, the industry offers numerous opportunities for further education for a successful career, such as becoming an independent automotive master or a manager in a car dealership or a master workshop.
