Project "Future Taxi": Vattenfall becomes the largest charging partner for Hamburg's e-taxis

With new locations and a tiered price discount for high charging volumes, Vattenfall is creating better conditions for the operation of e-taxis. The charging points are reserved exclusively for taxis and are intended to accelerate the industry's transition to emission-free vehicles.

Vattenfall is installing 24 new fast-charging points in Hamburg that are reserved exclusively for taxis. The charging points are being built at twelve Lidl stores across the city. This will increase the number of exclusive charging points under the "Zukunftstaxi" project from the current twelve to 36.

Schedule and locations

Within the next five months, ten charging points at five locations are scheduled to go into operation. The first site is Kieler Straße 595b, which has now been officially opened. The next sites to go live are the Lidl stores at Krohnstieg 55 and Dehnhaide 111 by the end of October. This makes Vattenfall the project's largest infrastructure partner.

Framework conditions of the "Future Taxi" project

Since the beginning of 2025, only locally emission-free taxis may be newly registered in Hamburg. The city supports the switch to electric vehicles with funding programs and the expansion of the charging infrastructure. Currently, around 700 e-taxis are in operation in Hamburg.

Senator Dr. Anjes Tjarks, Ministry of Transport and Mobility Transition:

"By expanding the exclusive fast-charging infrastructure for taxis, we are sending a strong signal for the future of the industry: environmentally friendly, reliable and economically attractive. Together with Vattenfall, we are laying the foundation to ensure that the sector in Hamburg not only fulfills legal requirements but also becomes a true role model for sustainable mobility. Drivers benefit directly: shorter distances, faster charging and a stable network dedicated solely to taxis. The 'Future Taxi' project makes a decisive contribution to the mobility transition on Hamburg’s roads!"

Usage and power supply

The new charging points are available around the clock and are accessible exclusively to taxis. They are powered by 100 percent green electricity.

"With today's kick-off, we are laying the foundation for a high-performance, exclusive charging infrastructure precisely where taxi drivers need it," explains Franziska Schuth‑Krohn, Managing Director, E-Mobility Germany, at Vattenfall. "Through this collaboration, we will ensure that our e‑taxi charging points can at least double—and, in the best case, triple—the number of exclusive taxi charging points in Hamburg by the end of the year. Price parity with public city chargers makes charging economically attractive, with 100 percent renewable electricity."

Prices and discount model

The current price for charging at the exclusive taxi fast-charging stations is 62 cents gross per kilowatt-hour. For frequent drivers, Vattenfall is offering a consumption-based discount model between June 1 and December 31, 2025:

  • from 450 kWh per month per charging card: 10 percent discount,
  • from 700 kWh per month per charging card: 20 percent discount.

With the highest discount, the average price drops to 49.6 cents gross (41.7 cents net) per kilowatt-hour. This puts the price level roughly on par with the existing municipal fast-charging stations for taxis.

Extended validity of the terms

The discount rules apply not only at the exclusive taxi fast chargers but also at other Vattenfall charging stations in Germany that are labeled “Operator: Vattenfall DE” in the InCharge app. Each charging card is considered separately; the respective consumption thresholds must be reached per card.
