"VMOBIL On": Demand-responsive buses and shared taxis in one app
Since September 1, 2025, the on-demand platform “VMOBIL On” has been in operation in Vorarlberg. It consolidates the existing dial-a-bus and dial-a-ride shared taxi services in the Unterland, Upper Rhine Valley, and Montafon regions into a single app.
Integration of existing services
Within the platform, the Anrufbus Unterland, the Rufbus and YOYO services in the Upper Rhine Valley, as well as the “go&ko” dial-a-ride shared taxi in Montafon, have been brought together. At launch, “VMOBIL On” is available in the Unterland and Upper Rhine Valley regions. In Montafon, integration of the dial-a-ride shared taxi is scheduled to follow at the start of the winter season.
Pilot project in the Upper Rhine Valley
In the municipality of Zwischenwasser, the existing on-demand bus service is being expanded as part of a pilot project. Since September, the service has been operating there on weekdays from Monday to Friday, continuously between 5:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
Digital booking via app
The software for “VMOBIL On” comes from ioki GmbH, based in Frankfurt. Passengers can search for, book, and pay for their trips via the app. An algorithm groups several passengers with similar directions into one vehicle to improve utilization and make local public transport connections more efficient.
“Our on-demand technology is the backbone of modern public transport. With our platform, which unites various demand-responsive services in a single application, we are jointly shaping an efficient and future-oriented public transport system,” emphasizes Dr. Michael Barillère-Scholz, co-founder and chairman of the management board of ioki GmbH.
“We are proud to support Verkehrsverbund Vorarlberg in digitizing its on-demand bus services and to improve mobility for everyone in the region together.”
Technical foundation and further deployments
In addition to the passenger app, the platform also includes an application for drivers as well as a cloud-based operations platform. The ioki software has been in use in Vorarlberg since 2020 in the Rufbus Unterland. It is also used, among other places, in Vienna’s Donaustadt district and in projects with autonomous vehicles in Pörtschach and Klagenfurt.
"With the new app, the existing on-demand services in the regions are now being unified and enhanced with the option of digital booking. This allows passengers to easily search for, book, and pay for their trip directly with just a few clicks."
said Christoph Reumiller, Head of the Technology Department at Verkehrsverbund Vorarlberg.
