Discussion in Davos: DEKRA CEO - Used Car Market for E-Cars Indispensable

(ots) DEKRA looks back on a successful participation in the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2025 in Davos. In the year of its 100th anniversary, the company used the global platform to discuss key challenges and solutions for sustainability and the mobility of the future.

One of the focal points of the DEKRA delegation was the accelerated adoption of electric vehicles (EVs).

CEO Stan Zurkiewicz emphasized: "When it comes to challenges in adopting electric vehicles, the discussions often revolve around affordability, including the purchase price and various government incentive programs. The performance of electric vehicles in terms of range is also a major topic, as well as the charging time and availability of charging infrastructure. Safety concerns also play a role."

The used car market for electric vehicles needs to change

However, a crucial aspect is often overlooked, according to the DEKRA CEO. "The state of the used car market for electric vehicles is receiving far too little attention. This market currently doesn't function properly. A functioning used car market is, however, indispensable for the accelerated adoption of electromobility. Electric vehicles lose more than 60 percent of their value within the first three years, and even at a price of less than 40 percent of the new price, they find few takers," Zurkiewicz continued.

The data indicate a need for action. According to the International Energy Agency, only 450,000 used electric vehicles were sold in the major European countries in 2023, 400,000 in the USA, and 800,000 in China - a relatively small number compared to a total stock of about 40 million electric vehicles worldwide.

"Several factors contribute to this situation, but the lack of confidence in the condition of used electric vehicle batteries is absolutely central," Zurkiewicz explained.

DEKRA as a Pioneer for Trust in Used Electric Vehicles

When it comes to the condition ("State of Health") of electric vehicle batteries, DEKRA is the right address. The company has already tested more than 25,000 used electric vehicles from more than 130 different models with the latest test technology. The patented process provides a fast, independent, and precise assessment.

"Our tests show that most traction batteries, even at higher mileages, are in significantly better condition than consumers feared - often with a remaining capacity of more than 90 percent," stated the DEKRA CEO.

The testing, inspection, and certification organization calls for closer collaboration between governments and the automotive industry to create a system that gives both dealers and buyers the necessary trust and confidence.

"It is therefore crucial that the relevant stakeholders, especially governments and the automotive industry as a whole, collaborate to create a framework that provides trust and security to all parties involved in the purchasing process. This contributes to the accelerated adoption of electric vehicles and the positive environmental impacts we all strive for."

DEKRA remains committed to a sustainable future

Furthermore, DEKRA has joined the WEF CEO Climate Leaders group in Davos and actively supports the energy transition. The company is committed to science-based climate targets (SBTi) that align with the 1.5-degree goal of the Paris Agreement and offers a growing range of innovative services related to the energy transition and ESG.
