Fewer people are using Moia's ride-pooling taxis

(dpa/lno) Since April 2019, the electric shuttle minibuses of the company Moia have been on the road in Hamburg. In 2024, the overall number of passengers decreased, but it increased for one group.

The number of passengers using the mobility service provider Moia declined last year. While 2.9 million people used the electric shared taxis in 2023, only 2.7 million passengers did so in 2024, the company stated to the German Press Agency. In Moia's on-demand model, multiple passengers with similar routes share one vehicle. The optimal route is calculated by a computer.

Popular Offer

Moia was nevertheless satisfied with the year 2024.

"Our offer continues to enjoy consistently high popularity. Particularly pleasing is that last year wheelchair users used Moia's barrier-free service for 27,000 rides. In addition, severely disabled people and their companions were able to use Moia for 400,000 rides free of charge," it said. These numbers underline the demand and relevance of the offer.

At its peak in 2024, around 300 to 330 of the electric minibuses were on the road in Hamburg, and the company currently employs 740 drivers in the Hanseatic city.

Autonomous Buses in Test Operation from 2025

At the end of November, the company announced that they would be testing autonomous buses in Hamburg starting mid-2025. The vehicles navigate through traffic independently, but for safety, a driver is present on board.

"Selected individuals will then be able to book the autonomous Moias and be transported to their destination in the test area just like in regular operation—with the difference that the vehicle drives autonomously," said CEO Sascha Meyer.

The self-driving shuttles will be part of a test operation in real conditions with initially 25 vehicles, according to the company, which is part of the VW Group. By the end of 2026, the service is planned to become a regular operation in Hamburg. The Volkswagen electric van ID Buzz AD will be used.
