Doing Without Tesla? - Companies Open Debate

Still acquire Tesla cars or not? This question is being posed in some executive offices. Individual companies such as the Baden-Württemberg energy provider Badenova, the Hamburg green electricity supplier Lichtblick, or the drugstore chain Rossmann have already announced that they will forego new cars from the brand in the future. The trigger is various statements and actions by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

The Lower Saxony house construction company Viebrockhaus decided not to buy any more Tesla products at all. A so-called promotional house of the manufacturer was actually supposed to be equipped with a Tesla home battery as an energy storage system - now no longer.

The car manufacturer Tesla itself initially did not comment on the question of boycotts.

“We do not comment on this,” said a spokeswoman for Tesla's only electric car factory in Europe, located in Grünheide near Berlin.

Musk polarizes

Tech billionaire Musk polarizes: Recently, he issued an election endorsement for the AfD on the X platform and intervenes in election campaigns in other countries as well. Shortly after taking office, the new US President Donald Trump officially established a committee where Musk, his confidant, is supposed to help drastically cut US government spending.

"Elon Musk's actions, now practically in a government role, have caught our attention," said Badenova board member Hans-Martin Hellebrand even before the change of power in the White House. The Freiburg energy manager criticized that the activities of the US entrepreneur are weakening Germany as a business location. "We will not accept this."

Eleven Tesla vehicles will continue to run at Badenova until the end of the leasing contracts, but the provider will not acquire any new cars of the brand. It is also parting ways with Musk's short messaging service X.

Lichtblick referred, among other things, to Musk's repeated campaign advertising for the AfD. The Hamburg-based company has stopped using Tesla vehicles since the beginning of the year and is not renewing any leasing contracts, as a spokeswoman reported. The company has a fleet in the double-digit range, half of which was previously Tesla.

Hausbauer: Incompatible with Corporate Values

Tesla has revolutionized e-mobility in Germany and stood for new ideas, recently stated the CEO of Viebrockhaus, Lars Viebrock.

“We can no longer support the current path.”

Musk's political stance contradicts the company's values. The drugstore chain Rossmann had already announced last year that they would not purchase any more Tesla vehicles for their fleet due to Musk's support for Trump.

Is the approach of forgoing goods or services even promising? “Basically yes,” said business ethicist Michael Aßländer from the International Institute Zittau of the Technical University of Dresden to the German Press Agency. Plummeting sales figures - such as due to a consumer boycott - would force companies to take action.

Business Ethicist: Announcements Can Be Good PR

The scientist, however, pointed out:

"Individual decisions by comparatively small companies to refrain from purchasing products from certain manufacturers in the future may create good PR, but they remain largely ineffective."

Tesla is unlikely to be impressed if a regional German company no longer signs car leasing agreements.

The expert raised another question: In owner-managed companies, it is relatively easy to express ideological viewpoints or a political stance because it reflects the conviction of the respective owner. In corporations, the situation is often different, as boards must represent a sometimes diverse group of shareholders.

The car-sharing company Miles Mobility reported that the demand for Tesla cars remains stable.

"We have not observed any changes in usage in recent days or weeks," the company announced.

The nationwide Miles fleet includes around 380 Tesla vehicles. When asked if new cars would be added, the answer was that current plans do not foresee any additional Teslas. In car sharing, you don't buy a car but share it with other users. The owner of the car is usually a car-sharing provider.
