Hyundai Mobis presents a system for monitoring and preventing 10 safety-compromising behaviors of vehicle occupants.
It is intended to prevent reckless driving behavior such as drowsiness and mobile phone use and even check if the children in the back seats are properly secured in their car seats to avoid accidents.
This technology is called the In-Cabin Monitoring System (ICM), and Hyundai Mobis will start accepting orders from customers around the world later this year, as the company announced on January 22.
Capture, Analyze, Warn
The in-cabin monitoring system consists of cameras (hardware) that monitor the passengers, and software logic that analyzes the data. Initially, the camera installed in the vehicle captures the posture and position of the passengers as well as their biosignals in real time. The software logic then analyzes the camera data to identify potential risks and warn the passengers with acoustic and visual alerts.
For example, it can warn the driver if they close their eyes and fall asleep, suggesting they should take a break. More than 10 scenarios have been developed in which the system can help prevent accidents that jeopardize safety, including using mobile phones or smoking while driving, letting go of the steering wheel, not wearing the seat belt, and leaving small children unattended in the back seat.
Development Focus on Software Logic
Hyundai Mobis received the ASPICE certification, the European standard for automotive software, through the development of this system, and has reportedly also exceeded the targets of the NCAP (New Car Assessment Program).
In developing the In-Cabin Monitoring System, Hyundai Mobis has focused on software logic. And this year, there are plans to enhance the health function for analyzing the driver's biosignals and accelerate the development of a new next-generation technology (Version 2.0) for commercial fleet services.
“With the advancement of automatic driving technology, the demand for comfort features and safety technologies in vehicles is increasing significantly. Hyundai Mobis will focus on the development of highly precise software capable of analyzing the different physical structures of each individual passenger," said Shin Kyu-chul, head of the electronic control development group at Hyundai Mobis.
Combinatorics Crucial
The conventional passenger safety system differentiates between the driver's seat and the rear seats and uses various advanced technologies in the driver's seat for the safety of the passengers. However, Hyundai Mobis has combined multiple technologies into a single system to ensure the safety of all passengers in the vehicle.
In 2019, Hyundai Mobis succeeded in developing a DMS that captures the driver's pupils to prevent drowsy or inattentive driving. In 2020, the development of the rear seat monitoring system followed, which uses radar to prevent children from being left unattended in the rear seat, and in 2022, the driver assistance system was successfully developed, which recognizes the driver's posture and biosignals, including heart rate.
