Tesla refreshes its Model Y
The Model Y is one of the most successful vehicles worldwide for the American electric car manufacturer Tesla. In 2023, it was the first electric car to become the best-selling car globally — regardless of the powertrain. It also leads the registration statistics for electric cars in Europe and Germany.
Now, five years after its initial release, Tesla has introduced the facelift model of the mid-size SUV. It is set to reach customers starting in March. The new Model Y costs from 60,990 euros in the all-wheel-drive, better-equipped launch version. More variants will follow, but the manufacturer has not yet announced dates and prices for these. For orientation: the current starting price of the series begins at 44,900 euros.
Light Bars Like the Cybertruck
Visually, the slightly elongated 4.79-meter new edition differs most significantly at the front and rear from the previous Y model. Tesla thus references its sharp-edged Cybertruck and the 2024 introduced Robotaxi Cybercab with the wide light bars at the front and back.
The aerodynamics of the body have been refined, including the rear spoiler and the wheels. This also impacts efficiency. According to the manufacturer, energy consumption in the initial version has been reduced from 16.9 to 15.3 kWh/100 km due to the new design.
Technically, there is, among other things, an additional front camera in the middle. According to Tesla, the interior has been refined. For instance, the front seats have been newly designed and now feature ventilation. Additionally, the sound insulation is said to have been improved.
The turn signal lever remains - a screen for the rear is new
The classic turn signal lever remains – unlike the Model 3, where this function was integrated into the steering wheel with the facelift. For the first time, an 8-inch screen is available in the rear for climate settings and entertainment - and the rear seats are electrically adjustable and foldable.
The all-wheel drive launch version on 20-inch wheels is powered by two motors. With this setup, the car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, with propulsion ending at 201 km/h. Tesla specifies the range according to WLTP as a maximum of 568 kilometers - about 35 kilometers more than previously for the comparable Long Range version.
