(dpa) Even after the change of government in Washington, Volkswagen CEO Blume does not see the growth trajectory in the USA at risk. He points to the corporation's billion-dollar investments.

The Volkswagen Group continues to focus on strong growth in the USA. Group CEO Oliver Blume does not see this course as being threatened by the inauguration of US President Donald Trump.

Porsche as a Role Model

"The North American market plays a major role for us. It is a central component of our growth strategy," said the head of Europe's largest car manufacturer to the 'Braunschweiger Zeitung/Wolfsburger Nachrichten'.

By strengthening the US business, Volkswagen aims to become more independent from the Chinese market.

"I consider it extremely important to have a strong foothold in all regions to make the Volkswagen Group's business more flexible and robust," said Blume. The model for this strategy is the group subsidiary Porsche.

Blume points to strong commitment

In the USA, the company is investing 15 billion dollars, and in Canada 5 billion. That is an "extremely strong statement for North America," emphasized Blume. Companies that are so committed should benefit from low tariffs. Trump has announced high tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada. VW operates or is constructing production facilities there.

"We will work with the new US administration in the proven manner," said Blume. It is evident that many US companies are also closely rooted with Canada and Mexico. "In Donald Trump's first term, we got to know a president who thinks economically, positions himself, polarizes, and then consistently moves towards implementation."

Objective: Alleviating Range Anxiety

The CEO announced that the use of range extenders would also be considered for volume models, including the E-models of the VW brand. These are small internal combustion engines that charge the battery of e-cars, thereby increasing the range.

This technology is to be used first by the US subsidiary Scout. "The range extender is a good argument to alleviate customers' range anxiety during the transition phase to e-mobility and to make their entry easier," said Blume.
