In 2024, just over 10.6 million vehicles were sold in the EU, an increase of 0.8 percent compared to the previous year, as reported by the European industry association Acea on Tuesday in Brussels. In December, new registrations rose by 5.1 percent to just over 910,000 units.

Petrol Engines Still in the Lead

Battery electric cars took third place again in 2024 with a market share of 13.6 percent. As the demand for diesel vehicles fell to 11.9 percent, they were also able to increase the gap to the fourth place. Petrol engines once again took first place with a share of one-third. Hybrid electric cars were close behind.

Overall, almost all major car markets in the EU recorded declines in 2024, although the extent remained moderate except for France (-3.2%). Spain, on the other hand, recorded an increase in new registrations of 7.1 percent. In Germany, sales fell by 1 percent.

VW Group in First Place

The Volkswagen Group maintained its first-place position in the EU last year with a 3.2 percent increase to more than 2.8 million vehicles sold.

Despite a 7.2 percent decrease, Stellantis (Peugeot, Fiat, Opel) followed with more than 1.7 million cars. The Renault Group, with a 1.9 percent increase to nearly 1.2 million cars, remained in third place as in the previous year. BMW had to accept a decrease of 0.6 percent, while Mercedes-Benz saw a decline of even 2.6 percent.
