Union Concerned About Jobs in the Automotive Industry in the East
The weakness of the German automotive and supplier industry hits East Germany particularly hard from the perspective of the union. There is concern about job cuts.
One in four industrial jobs in East Germany depends on the automotive industry – in West Germany, the proportion is significantly lower. This was reported by IG Metall districts of several eastern federal states and regional transformation networks, citing a commissioned study. 51,000 people worked in East German car factories, 200,000 in the supplier industry. A quarter of a million jobs in the East depend directly or indirectly on the automotive industry, they said.
Industry in Crisis
The industry is in crisis due to weak demand, the slump in electric cars, and new competition from China. Job cuts are looming. Manufacturers like VW, BMW, Porsche, Mercedes, Opel, and Tesla also have plants in East Germany.
The head of the IG Metall district Berlin-Brandenburg-Saxony, Dirk Schulze, said according to the statement: "Everyone must be aware that de-industrialization here would further promote incalculable social, economic, and political disruptions." An innovative industrial policy for all of Germany, with a targeted focus on structurally weak regions, is necessary.
Transition to E-Mobility
"The transition to e-mobility is an immense challenge for Saxony-Anhalt, as the automotive companies are still heavily reliant on traditional drives," said Thorsten Gröger, who leads the IG Metall district of Lower Saxony-Saxony-Anhalt.
He called for competitive energy prices and targeted promotion of e-mobility.
