E-registrations: Bavaria in first place again for the first time since 2019
Bavaria is once again number one in new registrations of pure electric cars. The Free State narrowly overtook North Rhine-Westphalia last year, as figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority show.
Specifically, there were 81,054 BEVs in Bavaria, 44 more than in the significantly more populous North Rhine-Westphalia, which had consistently been ahead from 2020 to 2023. Third place, as in previous years, goes to Baden-Württemberg with 66,479 purely battery-powered electric cars.
Two Car Manufacturers from Bavaria
Nationwide, new electric vehicle registrations fell by a good 27 percent last year. In Bavaria, they also decreased significantly, but the decline was below average at 23 percent.
The state benefits not only from relatively high average incomes but also from having two car manufacturers, BMW and Audi. Typically, there is a certain amount of company registrations and employee vehicles at the manufacturers' locations, which boost the statistics. In 2024, around 10 percent of electric cars nationwide were registered to manufacturers. In 2023, it was just under 6 percent.
Fewer New Registrations in NRW
In parallel, the proportion of new registrations to private individuals decreased from 43 to 36 percent. The fact that the population of Bavaria is smaller than that in NRW was thus not as significant. The main reason for this decline is likely the elimination of the state premium for private buyers.
