Talks about Northvolt funding
The talks about a rescue of the troubled Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt are ongoing.
"Numerous parties have expressed their interest in Northvolt's financing process," said a company spokesperson. Northvolt is in constructive discussions and thorough evaluations both with potential strategic partners and financial investors. "We remain confident that a successful restructuring will be achieved and that the company can emerge stronger from it."
A clear majority of the shareholders had previously given the company the green light to continue operations in Sweden at an extraordinary shareholders' meeting in Stockholm.
According to sources within the company, production at the Northvolt Ett factory in Skellefteå, Sweden, was further stabilized. Deliveries to customers proceeded as planned along the established delivery timelines. Since January, the factory has been led by German plant manager Markus Dangelmaier.
```What will become of Heide?
Northvolt has been struggling with financial problems for a long time. According to earlier Swedish media reports, the company is said to have debts amounting to 60 billion kronor (approximately 5.2 billion euros).
In the course of the crisis, Northvolt announced in September the layoff of an estimated 1,600 employees in Sweden and filed for creditor protection in the USA in November. It filed for a restructuring procedure under Chapter 11 of the US Bankruptcy Code there.
Schleswig-Holstein not affected
According to Northvolt, the project in Schleswig-Holstein is not affected.
"The construction work for the battery cell factory near Heide is progressing," said a spokesperson yesterday morning.
Currently, 6,500 additional piles are being set for the first production building.
"The earthworks in the current construction phase are largely completed, the construction roads have been established, and the privacy barrier has been erected."
The first cell assembly is scheduled to start in the second half of 2027, followed by the factory ramp-up.
