PwC Analysis: Global E-Car Market Grows Slower - China Far Ahead
In the central electric car markets worldwide, more than ten million purely battery-powered vehicles were sold last year. Among the 21 markets that the consulting firm PwC examined, there were 10.4 million sales, according to an analysis available in advance to the German Press Agency. This is 14.3 percent more than a year ago.
However, growth has likely slowed down significantly. In 2023, PwC had calculated an increase of 28 percent. The figures from the previous year have since been significantly revised downward. The main reason is that PwC has corrected its survey method for China to prevent vehicles exported from there from being counted twice. The difference amounts to several hundred thousand.
Germany loses its podium position
The absolutely dominant market is China with almost two-thirds of the volume - specifically 6.7 million pure electric vehicles (BEVs). It is also significantly above average in terms of growth, with a good 20 percent - based on the corrected figures from the previous year. Behind it are the USA with 1.2 million and an increase of 7.4 percent.
Third place goes - unlike in the past - not to Germany, but to the United Kingdom (UK) with 382,000 BEVs. That was a good 21 percent more than the previous year. Germany, on the other hand, falls just to fourth place because the domestic electric car market collapsed by a good 27 percent to 381,000 vehicles after the purchase premium was removed last year.
In other European markets such as France, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, or Sweden, electric vehicle sales also declined, but the decreases were milder there on a lower basis compared to Germany.
External factors play a major role
“Currently, it shows that the global electric vehicle market is still strongly dependent on external factors,” says Jörn Neuhausen of the PwC consulting firm “Strategy&”.
Thus, the strong sales in China at the end of the year can also be explained by “a kind of scrappage scheme for the purchase of electric cars”.

Withheld New Registrations
Overall, Germany is holding back "the momentum of the entire EU market" with its weakness, according to PwC. However, there is a special effect here that at least partly explains the current misery: because manufacturers must sell significantly more BEVs in 2025 to meet the tightened CO2 rules, they have shifted BEV sales from the past year to the current year. As a result, PwC expects a surge in electric vehicle registrations at the beginning of the new year.
Thomas Peckruhn, Vice President of the German Automotive Industry Association (ZDK), has also observed the shifting of registrations.
"We will see significantly increased new registrations of electric cars and plug-in hybrids in January," he says about the German market. "However, this is not a turnaround, just a flash in the pan."
The growth in 2024 was significantly stronger for plug-in hybrids than for pure electric cars. In the markets examined, it rose by 56 percent to 6.2 million. For hybrids without a plug, growth was 18 percent to 8.9 million.
