Trend reversal: People in Germany are driving more again.

(dpa) The so-called domestic vehicle mileage is increasing for the first time after five consecutive declines. However, each individual vehicle is being driven less. Overall, it equates to roughly two thousand trips to the sun and back.

People in Germany are driving more again. Last year, the cars registered in this country covered a good 594 billion kilometers, according to data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority. That was 3 billion more than the year before and the first increase since 2018. Previously, the so-called domestic driving performance with cars had decreased five times in a row. In 2018, it was still just under 631 billion kilometers.

However, the average mileage per car also fell in 2024 - at least for the tenth time in a row. According to the KBA, it was 12,309 kilometers - eleven less than in 2023. The fact that another total distance comes out in the end is due to the higher number of vehicles. The distance corresponded to about four times the distance from Earth to the Sun.

The vast majority of the distance was covered with combustion engine vehicles. About 283 billion kilometers were accounted for by gasoline engines, and about 230 billion by diesel engines. Other types of drives such as electric cars, hybrids, or gas-powered vehicles account for the remaining kilometers, but they are not specified separately.

Petrol cars are driven on average less than 10,000 kilometers

In 2024, petrol cars were driven an average of 9,555 kilometers, while diesel cars were driven 16,984. Diesel cars are especially popular among frequent drivers: From a certain annual mileage onward, their purchase usually pays off because the lower consumption and cheaper fuel offset the higher purchase cost and higher vehicle tax.

The increased mileage is also consistent with the fact that last year more petrol was delivered in Germany, according to preliminary data from the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control: 17.7 million tons of gasoline were delivered - 2.1 percent more than in 2023. However, diesel deliveries decreased by 3.3 percent to 32.2 million tons. Unlike gasoline, which mainly powers cars and motorcycles, diesel is also extensively used for trucks, tractors, or buses. Their mileage slightly decreased last year. These larger commercial vehicles together accounted for just under 102 billion kilometers. Motorcycles reached around 10 billion.
