Tesla as a taxi: HALE now enables retrofitting without additional adapters.

For taxi companies that rely on Tesla electric vehicles, the taxi conversion will become easier in the future. The Austrian taximeter manufacturer HALE has presented a technical solution that is intended to speed up installation, reduce costs, and render additional hardware unnecessary.

The electrification of taxi fleets is progressing in many places. Now HALE reports a development that should be of particular interest to entrepreneurs who want to use a Tesla as a taxi. The company has developed a solution in which the taximeter communicates directly with the vehicle—without additional adapters or intermediary devices. The core of the new solution is the direct connection of the taximeter to the vehicle's CAN bus. The distance-traveled signal required for taxi operation is read directly from the Tesla.

Direct connection to the CAN bus

According to HALE, the development is based on experiences with the CiA-447 standard used in vehicles from Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen. The signal is taken directly from the vehicle and comes without the need for additional hardware. For taxi operators, this mainly means one thing: less effort during installation. Additional adapter boxes, which had often been necessary up to now, are eliminated. This reduces not only the acquisition costs but also the complexity of the installation.

Less technology, fewer sources of failure

In day-to-day taxi operations, robust and low-maintenance systems are in demand. Each additional component can potentially lead to failures or service calls. The new solution addresses this exact point. By foregoing additional devices, the number of potential sources of failure is reduced. At the same time, installation time is shortened, since fewer components have to be installed and calibrated.

All-in-one system from a single source

HALE connects the new Tesla integration with its existing product portfolio. The taximeter MCT-07 is used, which, according to the company, is the only device on the market that already integrates the Technical Security System (TSE). A separate signing box is therefore not required. The system is supplemented by the TRS-W21 roof sign. It was specifically developed for vehicles with glass roofs – a feature that plays a central role in many Tesla models. In addition, the power supply to the roof sign is contactless. Also with regard to safety, HALE points to the taxi alarm TAA-03, which is supposed to meet the requirements for driver protection. For entrepreneurs, this creates a complete package in which the individual components are coordinated with each other. The use of different systems from various manufacturers becomes thus technically less necessary.

Nationwide service network

An important factor in the introduction of new vehicle technology remains the availability of installation and service partners. HALE relies here on collaboration with the retrofit specialist INTAX in Oldenburg as well as on a nationwide network of more than 200 service partners. This is intended to make the retrofit possible regardless of the company's location.
