Taxi meets Public Transport – BVTM meets Martin Körber

The taxi is not just a means of transportation, but increasingly part of a bigger idea: mobility for all – regardless of place of residence or physical conditions. This was the focus of the recent exchange between the Federal Association of Taxi and Rental Cars (BVTM) and SPD Member of Parliament Martin Kröber.

Even though Kröber will no longer be responsible for the Passenger Transport Act in the future, the taxi industry remains on his agenda: It falls under the subject of public transport, for which the deputy will be responsible in the Bundestag in the future.

The conversation with the managing director of the federal association, Michael Oppermann, and the government relations officer, Floris Cooijmans, revolved around precisely this interface – between the traditional scheduled bus and the flexibly bookable ride. This refers to the so-called "public transport taxi," a concept that is not new but is gaining increasing importance. Especially in rural areas, where scheduled services are often thinned out or not available at all, the taxi can fill gaps – provided it is integrated into public transportation.

Taxi is part of public transport

Kröber, who knows his constituency in Saxony-Anhalt well, showed himself open to this perspective.

“We especially need new solutions in rural areas,” that is his tenor.

The taxi could be more than just an individual service there – namely part of public services. The federal association sees it similarly and has been advocating for years for a stronger integration of the taxi industry into municipal traffic planning.

But it wasn’t just the role of taxis in rural areas that was the focus. The topic of inclusion was also addressed: How can it be ensured that people with disabilities can find a suitable mobility offer at any time and anywhere? The expansion of so-called inclusion taxis – vehicles with special equipment – is on the agenda. The association is calling for more support, beyond just in cities.

Small Expert Knowledge Coming

Another topic was the introduction of the so-called "Small Expert Knowledge." It is expected to be introduced later this year and will be mandatory for drivers who operate in occasional transport – such as with rental cars or ride-pooling services. The goal is to ensure quality standards, especially in customer service and legal certainty.

The fact that Kröber is no longer responsible for the PBefG does not diminish the importance of the dialogue from the association's perspective. They continue to place their trust in the SPD and the experienced member of parliament who is knowledgeable about transport issues not only in Berlin but also on-site.

The dialogue has thus been reopened, and according to the federal association, they look forward to continuing the already long-standing cooperation with Martin Kröber and his party.
