Following an agreement within the federal government on Sunday evening, Environment Minister Carsten Schneider (SPD) will, as announced, present at 10:00 a.m. details of the new electric-car subsidy. A ministry spokesperson told dpa in Berlin. With the subsidy, the government aims to make transport more climate-friendly.

The press conference had been postponed on short notice

Originally, the new funding conditions were to be presented as early as last Friday. However, the ministry postponed the press conference to this Monday at the last minute, arguing that coordination within the federal government was needed.

The federal government had already agreed last year on the key points for the new subsidy. Accordingly, private individuals with a taxable annual household income of up to 80,000 euros should be able to receive a subsidy.
Subsidy for around 800,000 cars

The "Bild" newspaper had reported further details last week. Thus, the premium is to apply retroactively to EVs that were registered since the turn of the year. Depending on income, marital status, and other criteria, subsidies of 1,500 to 6,000 euros could therefore be possible.

"The funds are sufficient for an estimated 800,000 vehicles in the next three to four years," Schneider told the newspaper. For families with children, there should therefore be more money. Applications are likely to be possible only from May, when a corresponding portal is activated.

There will also be funding for plug-in hybrids

Also, so-called plug-in hybrids should be subsidized under certain conditions. These are vehicles that can operate on battery power as well as on fuel.

Currently there is no funding. The then coalition of SPD, Greens and FDP abruptly halted it at the end of 2023 to plug budget holes.
