Fleet electrification in the taxi and rental-car industry: BVTM cooperates with SMART/LAB

The transition to electric propulsion is regarded in the taxi and rental-car industry as a necessary but complex step. Charging infrastructure, billing systems, and operating processes must fit together for electromobility to function in everyday life. Against this backdrop, the Bundesverband Taxi und Mietwagen (BVTM) has formed a new partnership: The Aachen-based IT service provider SMART/LAB now belongs to the circle of association partners.

Both sides share the goal of advancing the propulsion transition in the commercial sector. For BVTM, it is one of three strategic guiding principles – alongside ensuring the provision of public services in cities as well as in rural areas. SMART/LAB brings primarily technical and organizational know-how to the table for this. The company has been developing systems for operation, billing and management of charging infrastructure for around 15 years and works with energy suppliers, municipalities and commercial fleet operators across Europe.

Charging network threefold

SMART/LAB is more of a network/association than a classic provider. Under its roof the brands ladebusiness, ladenetz.de and ladeport are bundled. Ladebusiness targets commercial customers such as car dealerships, hospitals or housing associations. Ladenetz.de works mainly with municipal utilities and municipalities. With ladeport comes a still comparatively young field: the power supply for ships and the networking of inland ports.

Managing director Dr. Mark Steffen Walcher describes the portfolio in a sober manner: pricing, billing, services and operation of the charging infrastructure – depending on needs and partner. According to the company, there are currently 220 ladebusiness- and 275 ladenetz.de-Partner connected, in total around 480,000 charging points in Europe. For the cooperation with the taxi umbrella association, Walcher expects a practical, hands-on exchange. The industry brings with it specific requirements, from shift work to short dwell times. At the same time, SMART/LAB can leverage its experience to develop viable solutions for the transition to electric mobility.

Still room for improvement in charging infrastructure

For the first time, the collaboration became visible at the German Taxi and Rental Car Day in Erfurt. Walcher discussed on a panel there about fleet electrification, while his team in the trade fair hall informed about the offerings of ladebusiness. The appearance underscored the aim to engage with the industry not only strategically but also operationally.

For the BVTM, the partnership is part of a larger task. Managing Director Michael Oppermann points to deficits in charging infrastructure and processes in Germany. Electric mobility is a future topic that must be more firmly anchored in the industry. With partners such as SMART/LAB, they want to help make the switch more practical—step by step, beyond announcements.
