Scholz opens hydrogen filling station in Bremerhaven

(dpa/lni) In Bremerhaven, drivers can now also refuel with hydrogen if they have a suitable car. The new facility was opened by a prominent guest.

Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has opened the first hydrogen filling station in Bremerhaven.

"Hydrogen filling stations like this are emerging all over Germany and yet they are still all pioneer projects," said the Chancellor.

Such projects are only possible with entrepreneurial ambition and in close cooperation with the administration. In Bremerhaven, a trial operation is now beginning, and from March, the filling station will be open to everyone who has a suitable hydrogen car.

Climate-friendly Hydrogen at the Pump

The two fuel pumps are a few minutes' drive from the A27 highway, right in front of the depot of "Bremerhaven Bus." The company Hy-City Bremerhaven built the station, and green hydrogen can now be refueled there. A few kilometers away is the electrolyzer, which produces the hydrogen with a wind turbine. The Bremerhaven fuel is thus climate-neutral.

Refueling works in principle like at regular gas stations. Once the hydrogen is refueled, it is converted back into electricity in the vehicle, thus driving an electric motor. The only byproduct is water vapor. The station in Bremerhaven is public, and the first customer is "Bremerhaven Bus."

More than 100 hydrogen filling stations in Germany

According to estimates, there are currently more than 100 hydrogen filling stations nationwide. In the city of Bremen, the first hydrogen filling station opened in 2017. Another pump for hydrogen is planned a few meters from the Bremen border in Brinkum, according to the economic department. Further hydrogen filling stations are located in Oldenburg, Hanover, Braunschweig, and in the district of Osnabrück.
