Milestone reached: Over 1,000 hydrogen refueling stations worldwide in operation by 2024

By now, 45 countries have an infrastructure for hydrogen refueling either in operation or under construction. Around 1,160 hydrogen refueling stations were in operation worldwide by the end of 2024, representing a further increase compared to the previous year. This includes 384 hydrogen refueling stations in China.

New to the list of countries with operational hydrogen refueling stations are New Zealand, Bulgaria, and Slovakia. Additionally, there are concrete plans for at least 377 more refueling station locations outside of China.

Germany has the most hydrogen stations in Europe

By the end of the year, Europe had 294 hydrogen stations, 113 of which were in Germany. France ranked second in Europe with 65 stations, followed by the Netherlands with 25 and Switzerland with 19.

In Bulgaria and Slovakia, the first hydrogen stations in these countries were opened in the capitals. While a proportion of projects in Europe are still in the planning phase, the share of stations already in operation in East Asia continued to increase.

Overview for Asia and North America

By the end of 2024, there were 748 hydrogen stations in operation in Asia, 384 of which were in China. Despite the difficult access to information, H2stations.org was able to determine the details of 203 stations located in China. In South Korea, there were 198 stations in operation, and in Japan, refueling vehicles was possible at 161 locations. Outside of China, South Korea was the global leader in expanding hydrogen refueling infrastructure for the third consecutive time with 25 new installations.

In North America, 13 new stations were opened last year, with the number in Canada increasing by four to twelve. In the USA, nine new stations were opened; however, twelve stations were taken out of operation, reducing the number of operational refueling facilities to 89. Of these, 74 were located in California.
