Bitkom e.V. survey: Nearly half of Germans are open to remotely controlled vehicles

Ordered via an app, a car with an empty driver's seat pulls up, remotely controlled from the headquarters, it then brings the boarding passengers to their destination: Already 49 percent of Germans are familiar with remote-controlled driving, while 47 percent have not heard of it yet.

There is no driver in this type of mobility, and yet the control is taken over by a human – but that person is not sitting in the vehicle, instead, they control it remotely. Almost half of Germans can imagine riding in such a remotely controlled vehicle (46 percent).

This is the result of a representative survey commissioned by the digital association Bitkom, conducted with 1,005 individuals aged 16 and older in Germany.

"Remotely controlled driving systems represent great opportunities for innovative mobility offerings and can thus also strengthen Germany as a mobility hub," says Bitkom CEO Dr. Bernhard Rohleder.

Wishes for Autonomous Driving

Seven out of 10 respondents believe there should be special lanes for remotely controlled and autonomous vehicles (70 percent). Three-quarters also consider it sensible for self-driving or remotely controlled vehicles to be recognizable as such from the outside (77 percent).

"A visible marking of remotely controlled vehicles can help reduce remaining reservations. And an analysis of their opportunities and risks in real operation will help to better understand their impact on traffic safety," said Rohleder.

Autonomous Driving Still Only in Test Operation

While remote-controlled vehicles—also those from German providers—are already commercially operational in the USA, their use in Germany is still limited to test operation. The Federal Ministry of Transport released a draft of a remote control regulation in 2024. However, it remains to be seen whether remote-controlled vehicles will become a reality on German roads.

Note on the Methodology of the Survey

The basis of the information is a representative survey conducted by Bitkom Research on behalf of the Digital Association Bitkom among 1,005 people aged 16 and over via telephone. The survey took place from week 30 to week 33, 2024. The questions asked were: "Have you heard of remote-controlled or teleoperated driving, i.e., real vehicles in which the driver is not on board but controls the vehicle remotely?", "Can you generally imagine riding in a remote-controlled vehicle?" and "To what extent do the following statements apply to you or do you agree with them?"
