The 2025 accident statistics highlight the need for action in road safety.
In 2025, 2,802 people in Germany lost their lives in traffic accidents. According to final figures from the Federal Statistical Office, that was 62 fatalities more than in the previous year. On average, eight people per day lost their lives in road traffic. The number of injured also rose by 1.7 percent to around 371,000.
Accident activity remains at a high level
Overall, the statisticians registered 2.52 million traffic accidents. Around 322,000 people were slightly injured, 49,200 seriously injured. While the number of seriously injured fell by 2.9 percent compared with the previous year, the total number of injured increased.
In the long term, however, the development still points downward. According to the Federal Statistical Office, around 9,500 people died in traffic accidents in 1995, and more than 500,000 were injured at that time.
Alcohol and speed remain risk factors
According to the authority, in 2025 an alcohol-impaired traffic accident occurred on average every 15 minutes. 170 people died and 17,900 were injured.
Several causes often occur together. Alcohol often plays a role together with excessive speed or violations of the right of way. The most common cause of fatal traffic accidents remains too high speed.
Many accidents in urban areas, most fatalities outside urban areas
74 percent of all traffic accidents occurred within built-up areas. About two-thirds of all injuries were registered there. The most fatalities, however, occurred outside built-up areas. As reasons, the Federal Statistical Office cites, among other things, higher speeds, lack of separation of oncoming traffic, and limited overtaking opportunities.
Within built-up areas, 63 percent of the fatalities were pedestrians or cyclists. In e-scooter accidents, 33 people died, 26 of them within built-up areas.
More children killed
In 2025, 74 children under 15 died as a result of a traffic accident. The previous year it was 53. In total, 29,000 children were injured. Equivalently, a child was injured in a traffic accident every 18 minutes. 31 children died as occupants of a car, 22 were pedestrians, and 13 on bicycles.
Accident research calls for action
According to the insurers' accident research, 2025 was not a good year for road safety. In particular, the number of fatal accidents involving children under 15 and people aged 65 and older has increased. Measures for greater safety include, among other things, better visibility at intersections, additional crossing opportunities, and safer bike paths. (Source: dpa)
