First part of Toyota's city of the future completed
Toyota has completed the first section of its future city named Woven City in Japan after three years of construction. Over time, around 2,000 residents are expected to move into the city, including researchers, Toyota employees, and retirees, as company head Akio Toyoda stated on the sidelines of the CES technology fair in Las Vegas.
City of the Future
The Japanese automaker announced Woven City on the site of a former factory at the foot of Mount Fuji five years ago at CES. The idea behind it is to create a place where future technologies can be tested in everyday life. These include, for example, robots for elderly people and small drones with lanterns that can accompany you while jogging. For traffic, Toyota's autonomous shuttles are to be used.
Toyota Shows Interest in Rocket Technology
Toyoda also emphasized that the company is interested in rocket technology.
"Because the future of mobility should not be limited to Earth - or a single car company"
- he said with an apparent dig at tech billionaire Elon Musk, who, among other ventures, leads the electric car market leader Tesla and the space exploration company SpaceX. As a first step, Toyota invested in the Japanese rocket company Interstellar Technologies.
