Munich tests autonomous on-demand vehicles in public transport.
The MINGA project ("Munich's automated local transport with ride-pooling, Solobus and bus platoons") aims to investigate the integration of automated vehicles into public transport. The goal is to intelligently network driverless transport systems and sensibly integrate them into the existing networks of buses, trams and the U-Bahn. The focus is on the automation of on-demand vehicles and buses.
The project runs until mid-2027 and is supported under the funding directive "Autonomous and Networked Driving in Public Transport" by the Federal Ministry of Transport with around 13 million euros.
Involved partners and division of responsibilities
Central partners of the research project are Stadtwerke München (SWM) and Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG). Other participants are the Mobility Department of the City of Munich, the Deutsche Bahn subsidiary ioki, and the engineering firm Auto und Verkehr (IAV).
Together the partners are developing a ride-pooling system with three automated vehicles to be used in on-demand operation. The technical implementation will be carried out by IAV, which, on the basis of a VW ID. Buzz, will realize an autonomous shuttle with modern sensors and self-driving software.
Test operation in Munich districts
The operation is planned in several phases. Initially, test drives will be conducted without passengers, but with safety drivers. In a later phase, trips with passengers are planned under technical supervision.
The test area selected is the Gern/Nymphenburg district. The local micro-structure, complex traffic situations and proximity to important public transport hubs are considered particularly suitable to test automated vehicles under real-world conditions.
Data collection and industry guideline
As part of the project, extensive data on driving performance, maintenance and operational safety will be collected. In addition, it will be examined how a technical oversight for automated vehicles can be shaped in the future. The results are to be incorporated into a guideline that serves as guidance for further projects of this kind.
Further research priorities
SWM and MVG are furthermore working on four additional work packages. These include the integration of the on-demand service into MVG's existing information systems, the assessment of a possible priority for automated buses in road traffic, the investigation of user acceptance, and the analysis of scaling possibilities for automated systems in public transport.
