Diesel prices are rising: Taxi and rental-car association calls for relief.
Since the flare-up of the Iran war, diesel prices in Germany have risen significantly. According to the Taxi and Rental-Car Association Germany e.V., this leads to substantial economic burdens for taxi and rental-car businesses. The association has therefore written to the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Federal Ministry of Transport, the Federal Ministry of Finance, and to the Federal Cartel Office with a letter, and is calling for swift intervention.
Specifically, the association demands antitrust examinations of price formation, tax relief, and targeted government aid for the industry. These measures secure daily mobility, especially in rural regions as well as for the elderly and the sick.
High share of taxes in the diesel price
According to the association, the diesel price in Germany currently consists of around 48 percent in taxes and state charges. Per liter of diesel, there are 47.04 euro cents of energy tax and around 18 to 19 euro cents CO2 pricing at a CO2 price of 55 to 65 euros per tonne. In addition, a 19 percent value-added tax is levied, which also applies to the energy tax and the CO2 levy.
Depending on the final price, the state thus collects between 85 euro cents and over one euro per litre. With each additional price increase at the pump, tax revenue also rises.
Criticism of the pricing of the oil companies
The association also notes that the current price increases cannot be fully explained by higher purchase costs. Fuel storage depots are partly still filled with fuels that had been procured at considerably lower prices. Nevertheless, at the pumps prices are already being charged that reflect a higher procurement level. Consumer advocates and the ADAC have criticized this approach for years.
Industry sees structural double burden
The taxi and rental-car industry is regulated by tariffs and price controls. At the same time, it competes with platform-mediated rental cars. Rising diesel prices could therefore not be readily passed on to passengers.
Against this backdrop, the association calls for either a suspension of CO₂ pricing on fuels for taxi and rental-car businesses or alternative relief instruments such as diesel subsidies, tax refunds, or special depreciation allowances. The revenues from CO₂ pricing would flow entirely into the Climate and Transformation Fund, while affected businesses would not receive targeted support.
