After the fuel discount: drivers have to pay substantially more.
With the expiry of the tank discount, fuel prices in Germany have risen noticeably. According to ADAC, the nationwide average price for one liter Super E10 at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday was 13.4 cents higher than the previous day's value. Diesel increased by 15.6 cents in the same period. Together with the price increases from Tuesday, the tax relief has thus been largely undone.
Price development after midnight
The tax reduction on fuels ended at midnight. It had amounted to a relief of 16.7 cents per liter for supplying the gas stations. Because of the so-called 12 o'clock rule, filling stations were not allowed to raise their prices at midnight. According to ADAC, however, many operators had only slightly reduced their prices after the price jump on Tuesday.
Lower daily fluctuations
Usually, fuel prices fall significantly after the daily noon rise as the day progresses and reach their daily low in the morning. This pattern largely did not hold according to ADAC. As a result, the price difference to the previous day widened continuously over the course of the day.
Almost two euros for Super E10
At 8:00 a.m., the nationwide average price of a liter of Super E10 was €1.971. For a liter of diesel, an average of €1.913 was charged. If prices develop over the course of the day similarly to the past months, the price of Super E10 could rise again above two euros per liter.
ADAC criticizes price development
The ADAC regards the price increases as premature and unjustified. According to the automobile club, at many gas stations there is still fuel that was delivered at the cheaper tax rates. Therefore, in the club's view, prices should not have risen so sharply already on the last day of the fuel discount.
A few gas stations were still recording fuel prices below €1.80 per liter on Wednesday morning, particularly for diesel. However, with the permissible price increase at noon, these offers are likely to disappear largely.
The fuel discount was in effect from May 1 to June 30. The federal government had previously anticipated tax shortfalls of around €1.6 billion. (Source: dpa)
