Volkswagen, Vattenfall and Future Taxi: Hamburg Further Advances E-Mobility in the Taxi Industry
The Hamburg Transport Authority had invited people to the "Future Taxi" event – a project that in the Hanseatic city is no longer a mere vision, but a lived reality. Around 700 locally emission-free taxis are already on the roads. Location of this year's edition: Volkswagen Automobile Hamburg at Stockflethweg 30.
Successful Story: Future Taxi
Dirk Ritter, head of the Hamburg Transport Authority, welcomes the guests. Hamburg, he emphasizes, is not easy ground for political projects – but the courage has paid off for the taxi industry. The future taxi is a success story, "only possible with strong partners." One of them: Volkswagen. Ritter leaves no doubt that electromobility is not a trend, but an expectation. If you stand still, you'll eventually be left behind. This also applies to the taxi industry.
ID.4 - Premiere with Robust Seat Surface
Melanie Neugebauer from Volkswagen Passenger Cars brings the premiere of the day: The ID.4 with taxi equipment from the factory. For the first time painted instead of wrapped, without the previously usual sensor cover in signal color – a subtle evolution. Prices? Not yet fixed, but "similar to the retrofitted model." Most importantly, one can now "buy the ID.4 with the Popöchen," as Neugebauer says with a smile – referring to the durable "Robust" seat, standard for use in the tough professional environment.
There are also solid figures: Wolfsburg offers a 17 percent discount on the purchase price, 3.9 percent interest on financing through VW Bank.
VW Commercial Vehicles with a Full Program
Joachim Flämig from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles lists what the sister brand from Hanover has to offer: The Caddy as an all-rounder, the Multivan soon as an eight-seater, the Crafter for large-volume tours – and the ID.Buzz as an electric beacon of hope with character. Additionally, there is the new Transporter, available from the end of the year even with a slightly larger 70 kW battery and then about 350 instead of 300 kilometers range.
VW Commercial Vehicles offers a five-year warranty, divided into two years basic warranty and three years extended warranty – up to 150,000 kilometers. The collaboration with taxi converter Reuss is described by Flämig as a “divine providence.” Sales promotion is model-dependent – and here too applies: Electric is preferred.
Politics, Expertise and the Gallic Spirit
Michael Oppermann, CEO of the German Taxi and Rental Car Association (BVTM), paints a differentiated picture. Hamburg is “the Gallic village” that opposes Uber. The “magic potion” is an authority in the city-state that shapes – not one that looks the other way. At the same time, he points out challenges: The coalition agreement contains little substance for the taxi industry. However, the small proficiency certificate will come in the autumn, and a nationwide action day is also planned. And: Card payment will become mandatory.
Oppermann also issues a warning to those present. The taxi industry must absolutely come to an agreement among themselves. To remain in the imagery of Asterix and the Gauls: Between fighting among themselves and unity against the “Romans” – meaning Uber – one should definitely choose the latter.

New Partner Vattenfall
An essential component of the electrification strategy is the charging infrastructure. Vattenfall, a Swedish energy company and cooperation partner of the city, is developing 26 fast charging points exclusively for taxis at Lidl branches as part of the project. While the charging points are marked as "for taxis only," they are not physically restricted. An observation phase will show whether this is sufficient - if not, exclusive access systems are being considered.
The stations will be strategically distributed across the entire city area. The first location: Kieler Straße 595b. The prices for charging have not yet been determined but are expected to be announced in June.
Aral Pulse Offers Charging with Added Value
Aral is also showing presence. With fast chargers, sanitary facilities, and Payback cooperations, they promise a "comprehensive offer for frequent users." Although there are no major innovations, there is a clear commitment to the breadth of the propulsion spectrum - from combustion to battery. At Aral, they rely exclusively on fast chargers and offer, in addition to charging, the infrastructure of a gas station with a shop and café.
Consulting Reality and Vehicle Choice
In a conversation with Taxi Heute editor-in-chief Thomas Kanzler, Martin Voß, site manager at Volkswagen Automobile Hamburg, explains that individual entrepreneurs and multi-vehicle entrepreneurs need to be advised differently. An individual entrepreneur who understands his vehicle as a work environment has different requirements than a large company with employed drivers. Therefore, he often recommends the ID.4, which is "simply a good taxi". The ID.7, on the other hand, offers space like an E-Class and the ID.Buzz is more of an emotional, but more expensive choice.
A present taxi entrepreneur affirmed: “Volkswagen. Thank you for still producing cars for us taxi entrepreneurs!”
Ritter Promotes the Exploration of New Markets
Dirk Ritter concludes the event with an appeal: More offerings instead of just standard, more customer proximity, more courage. Hamburg, says Ritter, will not open the market for new providers but will continue to look closely. Currently, there are about 500 to 600 taxis too many. Shrinking is inevitable. The taxi industry should also consider that it is not easy for the Hamburg transport authority either, as it also struggles with personnel shortages. However, the taxi industry can continue to rely on pursuing common goals. Hamburg's goal: a taxi that not only keeps up in terms of technology and service but convinces. The future drives electrically – and in Hamburg, also with attitude.
