"Turquoise" is the color of autonomous driving

Mercedes-Benz is the first automotive manufacturer in Germany to receive approval for special marking lights for automated driving. This approval is valid nationwide for testing purposes and is initially limited until July 2028. Germany is once again a pioneer in the field of automated driving, having been the first country in the world to permit highly automated driving (SAE Level 3). Mercedes-Benz took advantage of this opportunity and received the world's first internationally valid system approval for highly automated driving for Drive Pilot at the end of 2021.

"Turquoise" has already been included in regulations

The newly permitted exterior lighting indicates to other road users whether the highly automated driving function is activated. Traffic authorities and the police should also be able to more easily recognize the system status and determine whether the driver is allowed to engage in other activities during the highly automated drive. The marking lights are integrated into the front and rear lights as well as into the side indicators in the exterior mirrors. When DRIVE PILOT is activated, they light up turquoise – the color that Mercedes-Benz aims to establish for automated driving. Turquoise has already been included in various standards and draft regulations (SAE J3134, UNECE, and China Compulsory Certification).

"At Mercedes-Benz, we consider automated driving holistically and, in development, also take into account those aspects whose significance grows with increasing fleet size," explains Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Chief Technology Officer, Development and Procurement. "The use of marking lights and the accompanying communication between the vehicle and its surroundings is therefore the next evolutionary milestone for Mercedes-Benz. I am proud that this special permit honors our efforts to promote acceptance and trust in this technology."

The special permit granted by the Stuttgart Regional Council is initially valid for testing. Insights from the test phase can contribute to shaping the legal framework conditions that will then enable a later series deployment. The US states of Nevada and California granted Mercedes-Benz similar special permits at the end of 2023. Testing is already taking place there.

Why Turquoise is the Color for Automated Driving

Turquoise meets two essential criteria: First, turquoise is clearly distinguishable from existing vehicle lighting and traffic signals such as traffic lights or emergency lighting. This significantly reduces the risk of confusion. Second, it allows for reliable and quick recognition by other road users. Studies with test subjects have also shown that turquoise is the optimal color for automated driving: In terms of both physiological and psychological factors, turquoise performed better than other colors. Engineers, compliance managers, data protection officers, and ethics experts have collaborated interdisciplinarily for the development and approval of the new lighting concept.

Drive Pilot travels at 95 km/h

At the end of 2024, Mercedes-Benz introduced the next version of Drive Pilot. With this, you can drive in Germany under certain system conditions up to 95 km/h on the right highway lane in a highly automated manner. This makes Drive Pilot the world's fastest Level 3 system in a series production vehicle. The testing of the marking lights will take place with test vehicles.
