Future of Public Transport: Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Tests First Autonomous On-Demand Bus

(dpa/mv) The district of Ludwigslust-Parchim is testing a new mobility concept for rural areas. By 2028, passengers are to be transported without drivers – on demand, by booking, and entirely without a fixed timetable.

In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the test operation for the state's first autonomously driving on-demand bus will begin in July. The transport company Ludwigslust-Parchim (VLP) will initially test the vehicle in the Hagenow area. During the test phase, a safety driver will be on board, and passengers will not be taken along initially.

Technology and Approval

The used minibus was equipped for autonomous driving by the Berlin company Motor AI. The equipment includes several cameras, radar, and laser sensors that provide a continuous image of the surroundings. The necessary testing approval was granted by the Federal Motor Transport Authority.

Gradual introduction by 2028

According to VLP, deployment on additional routes in the district of Ludwigslust-Parchim, which is one of the largest districts in Germany in terms of area, is planned for 2026. From 2027, the first passengers should be able to ride in the autonomous on-demand bus—accompanied by a so-called acceptance driver, who is meant to build trust with the passengers. Regular operation without personnel in the vehicle is planned for 2028.

Functionality of the on-demand bus system

On-demand buses run on fixed routes but only operate upon prior booking by passengers. These are generally minibuses with several seats, also known as large-capacity taxis. The system is intended to improve connectivity, especially in rural areas.
