Shell is one of the top 4 providers of electric charging stations in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The results of the latest Shell electromobility study confirm the trend towards more confidence in e-mobility. In Germany, about 64 percent of respondents are satisfied with the charging options and around 51 percent are less concerned about range than they were twelve months ago. At the same time, the charging experience is becoming more important – charging should be quick. About 37 percent of respondents are willing to pay more for fast charging. And: The offering during charging – especially in the shop area of a gas station - must be right: 69 percent of the respondents would drive longer distances to get an attractive offer for the duration of the charging time. Every second e-driver is annoyed by the many apps. 71 percent would like the "one and only app" for everything related to charging.

"Emissions in the transport sector must decrease. That's why more drivers are switching to electromobility. We want to be the provider of choice and offer our customers attractive charging options at and beyond the gas station, whenever and wherever they want to charge their car," says Florian Glattes, Head of Shell's service station business in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. "With around 1,500 fast-charging and over 1,000 AC charging points, Shell is currently one of the leading providers in Germany. Our goal is to offer a public charging network with 200,000 charging points worldwide by 2030."

The study shows: Once someone has embraced it, they stick with it: More than a quarter (26 percent) of German e-drivers already own their second e-vehicle. Only 38 percent of German e-vehicle owners also keep a car with a combustion engine. The more trust there is in the range, the more distance e-drivers cover with their car. Around 30 percent of private e-drivers already drive more than 15,000 kilometers per year on average, more than the average among private combustion engine drivers. E-drivers praise that they save money compared to combustion engines and have a lower environmental impact.

Methodology of the study

A total of 33,696 interviews were conducted for the study in the USA, China, and Europe (Austria, Belgium, France, Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom). Among them, 9,397 were conducted in Germany, taking into account drivers of both e-cars and combustion engines in both the private and commercial sectors.
