ADAC: 2024 was the third most expensive year for refueling

The past year was somewhat more favorable overall for consumers in terms of fuel prices than 2023. This is shown by the ADAC's review of fuel prices in 2024.

Accordingly, a liter of Super E10 cost an average of 1.739 euros in 2024, while diesel averaged 1.649 euros per liter throughout the year. Compared to the previous year, Super E10 was thus about five cents cheaper, and diesel just over seven cents cheaper. Following the record years 2022 and 2023, 2024 ranks as the third most expensive year for fuel.

Cheap or expensive refueling

According to ADAC, the most expensive refueling day for Super E10 was April 17, 2024, with an average price of 1.867 euros per liter. The cheapest was on October 1, 2024, with an average of 1.631 euros, more than 23 cents less per liter. For diesel, February 13 was the most expensive day of the past year, with a nationwide average of 1.767 euros per liter. The cheapest day for refueling diesel was September 18, at 1.523 euros per liter – a difference of more than 24 cents per liter.

The cheapest month of the past year for both types of fuel was September: Super E10 averaged 1.650 euros, while diesel was at 1.544 euros. The most expensive refueling month in 2024 for Super E10 was March at 1.851 euros per liter, while February saw the highest diesel prices at 1.746 euros per liter.

Current Fuel Prices Lower

The current fuel prices are significantly removed from the high prices of February and March of last year. After peaking in spring, fuel prices fell almost continuously until September 2024; only since then has a slight counter-movement become apparent. A significant role was played by the high oil price (Brent) with quotes above the level of 90 US dollars per barrel in spring.

In September, however, a barrel was sold for about 20 US dollars cheaper, which is reflected in the annual lows of gasoline and diesel. The slightly rising fuel prices of recent weeks are due to the somewhat firmer oil price, but also to the noticeably weaker euro compared to the dollar.

At the end of 2024, the prices for both types rose again. As the current evaluation for December shows, a liter of Super E10 cost an average of 1.671 euros, which is 1.3 cents more than in the previous month. For a liter of diesel, drivers had to pay an average of 1.604 euros, which is 1.6 cents more than in November.

Predictions on Price Development Difficult

How fuel prices will develop in the coming months depends on many variables and cannot be reliably predicted. At the beginning of the year, the CO2 price was increased from the previous 45 to 55 euros per tonne of carbon dioxide emitted. This also has an impact on fuel prices. As a result, the CO2 levy for a liter of gasoline or diesel increases by around 3 cents per liter. However, the overall price development will largely depend on the oil price.

But other factors also play a role, not least the euro-dollar exchange rate. Nevertheless, there is hope that 2025 can be, on average, a slightly more favorable year for refueling compared to the past year, which in the spring of 2024 was still dominated by high prices. Currently, fuel prices are below last year's levels despite higher CO2 levies - a pleasing start to the new year from the consumer’s perspective, compared to 2024.
