The MOT sticker: What numbers and colors mean

(ots) It is highly sought after. But why is there a circular, colored sticker on the rear license plate at all? And what do colors and numbers mean? KÜS explains what it's all about and what you should know about it.

Primarily, the HU label serves to inform the vehicle owner and, for example, the police when the vehicle's next main inspection (HU) is due. This information is not only found in Part I of the vehicle registration certificate but also directly on the rear license plate via the label.

How to correctly read the HU sticker?

The two-digit number in the center of the sticker denotes the year, and the number at the very top indicates the month in which the next main inspection (HU) is due. For example, if the center shows a 25 and the top shows a 3, the next HU should be conducted in March 2025.

What does the color of the sticker indicate?

The color of the sticker allows you to instantly see which year the vehicle needs to undergo an HU. Each year is assigned a specific color: The stickers for 2025 are orange, those for 2026 are blue. Subsequent stickers are yellow, brown, pink, and green. These six colors repeat in the same sequence every six years.

Why does the sticker have a black stripe on the edge?

The black stripe on the edge of the sticker helps to more easily recognize the month of the next main inspection (HU). It serves as a guide and resembles the hand of a clock: If the line in the middle of the stripe, for example, points to the 3 o'clock position, it means that the HU is due in March.

Why is the HU sticker important?

Vehicles must undergo a main inspection (HU) at regular intervals, as this is required by law. For passenger cars entering traffic for the first time, the first main inspection is due, for example, after 36 months, and all subsequent main inspections at intervals of 24 months. If the overall result of the HU is positive, the sticker can be issued.

It is advisable to keep an eye on the next due date for the HU, as penalties may be incurred for missing the deadline. Many KÜS partners offer a reminder service for this purpose. You can find the nearest KÜS partner at: https://www.kues-fahrzeugueberwachung.de/standortsuche
