More visibility for taxis: VSPV calls for National Taxi Driver Day.
This coming Sunday is again the International Taxi Driver Day - as every year on March 22. And what's worse: no one notices it, because this day currently has no significance in Germany.
“And that is, given the importance of the SME taxi and rental-car sector for sustainable and social mobility in our country, not comprehensible and completely unacceptable. The taxi is like a home away from home for customers.” said Patrick Meinhardt, who, as general plenipotentiary and head of the capital office of the mobility association VSPV, can only shake his head.
The Association of Private Commercial Road Passenger Transport in NRW ( VSPV ) wants to change this and to launch a nationwide initiative, which the chairman Jörg Füchtenschnieder describes as:
“A day that is a paper tiger does nothing for our beleaguered industry. Therefore, our proposal as VSPV: let us turn the nebulous International Day of the Taxi Driver into a National Taxi Driver Day and simply say thank you to all taxi companies and drivers—women and men—for your engagement. Under the patronage of Federal Minister of Transport Patrick Schnieder, all associations, sponsors and friends of the taxi- and rental-car sector should clearly demonstrate on this day how much heart, how much love, and how much enthusiasm taxi drivers and taxi entrepreneurs bring to serving people.”
The managing director Sascha Waltemate sees in such an initiative a great opportunity:
“There must be a central action day in Berlin and simultaneously in all state capitals - and with this we will start in the coming year 2027! Here it is about bringing the importance of the industry to the center - from tariff corridors to minimum tariffs, from the public-transport taxi to the inclusion taxi. Only with the taxi can we achieve real mobility justice especially in the evening hours and on weekends in rural areas as well as in the outer districts of cities. For this, a mobility pact is needed together by the federal government, the states and municipalities.”
For Füchtenschnieder, Waltemate and Meinhardt one thing is clear:
“Taxi driving is a service to people. Taxi driving is not just a job; it is a passion, it is for many like a vocation, it is a way of life. Taxi drivers are attentive companions throughout life’s stages. All of this must and should be honoured on a National Taxi Driver Day.”
