How to Protect Windshield Wipers from Freezing

(dpa/tmn) The windows are icy, and the wipers are stuck. Anyone who turns them on and lets them run over the ice risks damage. The best solution is to ensure that they don't freeze in the first place.

Cold temperatures mean icy windows for drivers. Those who want to stay safe on the road during winter should also keep an eye on their windshield wipers. They can freeze solid. The Auto Club Europa (ACE) offers tips on how to prevent this.

Special Covers or Soft Foil

To avoid dealing with frozen windshield wipers early in the morning, you can use special covers for the wiper blades. Depending on the car model, there are different sizes available. To properly attach the covers without causing any damage, you should use the service position for the windshield wipers whenever possible. This allows the covers to be easily slipped on.

If you prefer not to do this, an alternative is to place a soft foil under the wipers. The maintenance position also makes it easier to attach a cover film. However, you must ensure that the wipers remain in the maintenance position when the car is locked.

The ADAC recommends using an insulation film. Cardboard or paper should not be used, as such materials can absorb water and freeze.

And what if you simply flip the windshield wipers up preventatively without using the maintenance position? The ACE advises against this. If a strong wind blows, the wipers could snap back and damage the windshield.

How to Unfreeze Wipers

If the windshield wipers do freeze, experts recommend first removing the ice around them with a scraper. To then release the wipers, you can use a de-icing spray or a windshield cleaner additive for winter.

It is not advisable to let the windshield wipers run over frozen glass. If wipers are operated without prior de-icing, their rubber blades can be damaged, explains ACE spokeswoman Svea Hagen. Additionally, there is a risk that the wiper motor or the electronics could be overloaded.
