Protest on July 2: Taxi industry demands fair rules for all transport services

The German taxi industry has announced a National Day of Action for July 2. Protests are to take place in numerous major cities such as Berlin, Cologne, and Frankfurt. The goal is to persuade the cities to set minimum prices for ride-hailing services like Uber.

Demand for Uniform Competitive Conditions 

The Federal Association of Taxi and Rental Cars criticizes that there are no legally prescribed minimum prices for competing transport services. While taxi companies are bound by officially set tariffs, platform providers can largely set their prices freely. According to the association, this leads to unfair competition and precarious working conditions.

"The taxi industry calls on cities infected by Uber: Finally, introduce minimum prices! Social dumping and illegal work must be curbed and can be curbed. The cities have it in their hands,” 

explains Michael Oppermann, managing director at the Federal Association of Taxi and Rental Cars, who coordinates the national action day for the industry.

Cities Decide on Introduction of Minimum Prices 

As early as 2021, the Passenger Transportation Act created the possibility to introduce municipal minimum prices for rental vehicle services like Uber. So far, however, only Leipzig and Lörrach have made use of this regulation. The decision on whether and to what extent minimum prices are introduced lies with the respective municipalities.
